Hi all,
Just want to share my IELTS experience here, hope it can inspire or motivate everyone.
Background- I'm a non-native speaker (of course!) and had a bad experience with the English language back then in high school time.
- On March 2017, I took TOEFL test with overall score 90 : 25R 23L 18S and 24W. I think it is equivalent to IELTS 6.5.
- I'm planning to apply for R2 this year, so I have to increase my score at least 100 or IELTS 7.
- I dissected all of the school requirements, and most of them accept either TOEFL or IELTS.
- Trying my luck, I decided not to take another TOEFL but register for IELTS. I read tons of articles and people's opinion in Quora that IELTS is relatively easier than TOEFL.
Oh yeah, so I can boost my score here.- The ending : I set a high target for myself :
7.5 with no band below 7.0.
Preparation- I booked exam for December 9, 2017.
- Although planning to spent about 25-30% of my GMAT study time for study IELTS, I couldn't realize this plan! I was panicked when discovering that my exam was 8 days more!
- At that time, I changed my plan : focus more on my IELTS preparation and suddenly buy
Magoosh IELTS subscription for one week. Many thanks for
Magoosh that gave discount for this course.
- I realized that we can find plenty of good resources on Youtube - but I really needed practice test. That was the reason I bought
Magoosh.
- So, everyday for 5-6 days I practiced Reading and Listening from
Magoosh test, and on average got 75-80% correct answer.
- For writing, I pushed myself to write an essay a day, and review that essay in the next day. I heavily learned from Youtube, mainky from Adam (EngVid/WriteToTop) who is the best writing teacher in my opinion.
- For speaking, well... I just trained with my friend. Didn't focused too much. Most of my friends just reminded me not to nervous on the D-day.
D-Day- Coming early, I waited for more than 1,5 hours. Exam started at 10.00 AM.
-
First part : Listening. I screwed several questions in the beginning! I predicted that I'd get maximum 7 for this part.
-
Second part : Reading. My favorite part. Read detailed all of the passage, answered all of the question quite confident. I believed I could get 8.5-9.
-
Third part : Writing. Got stuck on the first question! Skipped. Writing the second task, I remembered to put some of the complex and sophisticated writing styles. Back to the first question when the time was 10-15 minutes left. Had no idea what would be my score.
-
Fourth part : Speaking. Waiting for 3 hours.. Passed the exam with fluent but quite not accurate : much grammatical error and delivered only common vocab, maybe I just used big vocab not more than 5 times.
Getting the Score....- I opened the IELTS website, put in all of my data.
- Shocked and stunned! I got
8.0 in overall, with
8.5 in both Reading and Listening and
7.0 in both Speaking and Writing. Wowwww what happened? Even I opened the score more than three times, made sure that I didn't put different data.
I do not know guys, what has happened with my score. Maybe this is my Christmas present! And I wish my luck isn't ended, I still need for my GMAT!
For those who want to take TOEFL/IELTS test, you can do it!!!!
I mentioned in the beginning, bad experience in my high school about English language.
I was the person that got the lowest score in my class during high school. From 100 questios, I got only 33 correct answers. Even I still remember the score until now.
Now, everything seems possible right?
Cheers!
