I graduated college last June and have had no success in the job market since then and have decided to pursue a masters starting in the 2021-2022 academic year. I wanted to know what the best plan for me would be.
My background:
Graduated from a US News T15 in June 2019 with a BA in Mathematics in three years (20 years old on graduation) with a 3.5 GPA.
No work exp, ended up getting a job as a truck driver in Manhattan to try to make ends meet in the meantime.
Have been studying for the GMAT for awhile, haven't taken an official test but have been averaging in the mid 700s on mocks gotten a 770 on a Veritas mock.
My dream job would be S&T on some sort of exotics desk. I have exposure from school to mathematical option theory. The plan as of now is to try to find some sort of internship or job that can serve as a testament to my working ability and apply R1 to some schools in September. Looking for general advice on courses of action. I'm looking to apply mostly at European Bschools.
A few questions I have:
What is the best course of action to take with respect to getting work experience both for getting into school and for getting internship/job offers from within a masters program?
What might the outcome differences be for S&T in a MSF vs MiM program?
Will I be able to get sponsorship to work in London? And how will I be advantaged/disadvantaged trying to recruit in London vs NY?
Programs I'm looking to apply to:
Oxford MFE
LSE Msc Finance
MIT MSF
Imperial Msc Finance
Bocconi Msc Finance
ESADE Msc Finance
HEC MiM/ESCP MiM (Join a School in France)
EDHEC MiM
Well, if you want to get into S&T you cannot go wrong with a MSF degree. However, MSF programs (particularly Oxford, HEC, LSE,MIT, Imperial) would require more work experience. However you have strong background in Math and quants, and your UG rank works in your favor as well.
There is no specific advantage/disadvantage of working in London V/S NY. Yes the Wall Street is based out of NY, but apart from it it mainly depends upon the brand of your school. If it is the Top 5, you are bound to get good opportunities in both the regions.
Right now, I would say EDHEC is a safe school for you
Dream - LSE, Duke,MIT, HEC
Competitive - ESADE, Bocconi
