I just took the GMAT exam for the first time after about 2 months of studying and got a lower than expected score 700 Q50 V34, and an extremely unbalanced (low) verbal score. Cancelled my score immediately and am preparing to re-take the GMAT.
A few questions for all the GMAT experts:
How long would you recommend studying if I am aiming for an overall score increase about 50 points (at least 730)?
Would you suggest re-taking almost immediately without taking a break in between so that I won't forget whatever I have learned so far?
Any advice on what the most effective study materials or how I should change my study plan is greatly appreciated!
Below is some additional info on my test-prep, mock exam scores and what I experienced on the day of exam.
Day before Exam:
• Only slept for about 5-6 hours due to irregular sleep schedule
Day of Exam:
• Felt very thirsty during quant section, a bit distracted
• Had abundant time around question 20 or so and then spent too long on individual questions causing to not finish section (one q left unanswered)
• 8 minute break time felt short (barely enough to drink water and use restroom)
• Verbal section started with 6 mins short, extremely affecting pace for rest of the section and causing a lot of stress—thereby the low score
• RC felt harder than usual
• Not used to wide screen
• SC had a lot of unseen idioms or sentence structures (use of dashes?) Important to understand meaning
• CR was hard
ESR Report:
Verbal showed that the CR,RC & SC was respectively 45, 73 and 82 percentile. The CR score is shocking low and I generally find it hard to eliminate answers or brainstorm the answer...
Percentage correct in each section is the below (correct/incorrect):
1) 88/12
2) 57/43
3) 71/29
4) 12/88 (ran out of time so guessed my way through last few questions)
3/27/2018-6/9/2018, Main study periods (first two and last two weeks before exam), ~2 months total (on & off)
• Mock Test Scores:
• GMAT FREEPREP software test 1: 660 Q48 V33
• GMAT FREEPREP online test 2: 720 Q48 V41 (repeat questions)
• GMAT FREEPREP online test 1: 750 Q48 V42 (repeat questions)
• GMAT FREEPREP software test 2: 770 Q50 V44 (more repeat questions)
• GMAT Practice Exam 3 (a week before exam): 730 Q49 V40
Main study materials
o OG 2017 version (PS and SC was close to finish, but not DS/CR/RC)
o GMAT FREE PREP tests 1 & 2 (did 4 times total)—only finished reviewing 2 tests
o ManhattanPrep free test (did not have enough time to review answers)
o GMAT test 3 (did not review wrong answers)
o Listened to a few of Ron’s videos
o Visited Manhattanprep forums for answer discussions for each GMATFREEPREP question
• This wasted a lot of my time going through each response and pages of discussion and slowed down my study progress
• Is there a better way to review this material?
Thank you and best of luck to everyone!
