Hi
guest1708,
Once again not an expert but I hope my thinking process will help.
My thinking process were as follows:
Option A:
Quote:
resulting from the destruction of the largest library of the ancient world at Alexandria,
You see the "
resulting" which is a "comma + Present participle" modifier. It usually comes at the end of sentence modifying the entire clause or the subject of that clause. (Taught in the modifier module)
Ask yourself "resulting" what is resulting?
It cannot modify the preceding sentence, "In A.D. 391" (doesn't make sense) so is it modifying the proceeding sentence "later generations......"? Honestly, I am not sure if I am right but if its modifying the sentence that follows then shouldn't it be as, In A.D. 391, later generations lost all but the Iliad and Odyssey among Greek epics, most of the poetry of Pindar and Sappho, and dozens of plays by Aeschylus and Euripides, resulting from the destruction of the largest library of the ancient world at Alexandria.?
Option C:
Quote:
because of the result of the destruction of the library at Alexandria, the largest of the ancient world,
See that "
because of " (trigger)? Something happened..(clause) because of "noun" (Taught in the idiom module)
I am pretty sure "
In A.D. 391" could not have happened because of "
the result" (I think this is a noun which is right)....
The X (the destruction of the library at Alexandria) caused Y (later generations lost all but the Iliad and Odyssey among Greek epics) is the structure.
Option E:
Quote:
Alexandria’s largest library of the ancient world was destroyed, and the result was
I think the causality is lost because of the two independent sentence. But I would like to see an expert's take on this as well...
Whereas in option D:
Quote:
as a result of the destruction of the library at Alexandria, the largest of the ancient world
as a result of the destruction of the library at Alexandria, the largest of the ancient world (modifying the "library at Alexandria")In A.D. 391, as a result of X (the destruction)....., Y (later generations lost...) this happened.
I don't see anything wrong with this...
When I a structure or an idiom that is new to me, I write it down and I put the question in my
error log to go through it again in the future.
As a result of X....., Y happened (If I were you I would be aware of this structure)
Although, I had my reasons to eliminate option B, I am not confident if my reasons were valid. So I would like to see an expert's take on it. Sorry!
I hope this helps.
