Hello, Ravi1410. I agree with what has been written above: your performance on one section of the exam does not adjust the bar for any other. At the same time, I have heard from a few people that the first few questions may appear to be difficult—particularly in Quant—so do not feel surprised or intimidated if this happens to you. That first question might simply not be an entirely middle-of-the-road question, in terms of difficulty. If you need to spend a little more time in the earlier part of the test, so be it. Despite what GMAC™ claims in the OG, those earlier questions seem to carry more weight in determining your eventual score. (I have looked at plenty of ESRs to back up this notion.)

Good luck with your studies.

Hi Ravi1410,

How you perform on the quant section will not affect your starting point in the verbal section (or vice versa). For some more information on how the GMAT is scored here is a helpful article:

Hi Ravi1410,

Each section of the Exam is 'independent' of the other sections - meaning that your performance in the Quant section has no impact on the questions that you will receive in the Verbal section and vice verse.

From your initial message, it sounds as though you're just beginning your studies. Is that true? Have you done any significant studying so far?

If you're just beginning, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can access 2 for free from www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a bit of practice first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the general content and question types first, then that's fine - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) What is your goal score?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Thank you everyone for your inputs. Hi EMPOWERgmatRichC , my goal score is between 650-700. I have studied independently for few weeks. I am planning to take GMAT in few days. I have given the first free GMAC test and I scored 640. Q50 and V25. It is not that I didnt spend time on verbal, actually I have spent more time on verbal. While practicing I found the SC to be relatively ok but while in exam I found in difficult and made many mistakes that my verbal score went way below my target score. I am planning to apply to Rotman and Schulich. Any tips to improve SC in a short time.

Hi Ravi1410,

With a V25, you lost significant points in all 3 major Verbal categories (RC, SC and CR), so you could pick up all of the additional points that you are looking for in any of those 3 areas. Many GMATers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so if you have studied for just a few weeks - and you're planning to take the Official GMAT soon - then there might be a limit to how much you will be able to improve in such a short timeframe. Thus, if you're ultimately going to keep studying until you hit 700 (or higher), then you might want to consider pushing back your Test Date. However, if you would be satisfied with a 650, then if you took you took this recent CAT/mock in a realistic fashion that matches-up with how you will take the Official GMAT, then you likely have the capacity to hit a 650 right now.

1) When is your Official Test Date? Are you planning to take the At-home GMAT or are you planning to take your GMAT at a Test Facility?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?
4) What specific application deadlines are you facing?

Hi, I am pretty new to this topic. I have a question on sequence of exam. If I start Quant and score a Q50 or Q49. Then in Verbal will the question standard continue to be at that level or start fresh from medium questions. I am pretty weak in Verbal but strong in Quant I am exploring different ways to write the exam. Thank you.

Hi Ravi1410,

Quant and Verbal sections are independent of each other. And as you are facing difficulty with Verbal, I think you might find the below recording helpful.

And if you can tell me exactly what you are struggling at and your weak areas, then I can help you in a better way. We could get in touch over a call and have a detailed discussion on the same. You can use the below link to get in touch with me.
