Consider using question/time markers for time management. You spent 1:18 on average per question during Q4 Verbal, for example.

The person below went from a Q50 V31 to a Q50 V40. Although they took a bit of tutoring (6 hours), they mention a variety of quick tips/free resources you could check out. All the best on your next attempt.

Hello Experts,
I completed my GMAT Exam in October 2023 and I scored 680 (Q50, V31, IR 5, AWA 4). I need help understanding my ESR better because I'm planning to re-take the exam within 2 months.

Background -
This was my first attempt of the GMAT.
Last year I gave my first official mock (i.e. Diagnostic test) and had an abysmal score of 550 with V28.
I started my preparation for GMAT 6 months back and studied an hour or two each weekday and few hours on weekend.

Verbal preparations:
As a preparation strategy, I started with Manhattan SC guide and Power Score BIBLE for CR to strengthen my VR concepts. (A few year's back I was preparing for CAT and so felt confident with RC, given in RC had scored fairly decent!)
I used to practice official questions from GMAT CLUB forum, specifically by sorting them difficulty level wise (i.e. Initially 600 level and then 700; in the initial stage of preparation) and then topic wise. (i.e. For weaker areas, sorted topic and attempted those questions).
I also went through GMAT NINJA's video Series available on YouTube, and found it pretty helpful.
Over this months, I went through the content twice at least.

Quant Preparations:
For QA, I realized I needed practice in DS and so was focused on DS. To strengthen QA, I also attempted sectional tests of GMAT CLUB.

Mocks:
With the strategy above, I practiced for few months and gave an official mock somewhere in end of JULY and seeing a 700 score in official mock, I booked my slot for 3rd Oct.
In August and September, I had planned for mocks and gave the below mocks:

MGMAT 1-6 (Each weekend in August): Score was incremental from 630 to 670. (Avg. Q 45, Avg. V 34)
Official Mock 2 (First week of August): 710.
Official Mock 3 (Second week of Sep): 610 (Q48, V28) (In verbal, I blundered easy SC questions 9/13 wrong)
Official Mock 5 (Third week of Sep): 630 (Q44, V35) (SC was in place this time, but RC and CR few questions were wrong)
Official Mock 6 (Last week of Sep): 620 (Q 48, V31)

In the month of Sep, I already was feeling stressed with office work deliverables and had a off time because of neck cramps.
Aside of mocks, I had was also reattempting all my wrong questions in error log and did fairly well in CR (90+ Accuracy in 700 level questions), but badly in SC.
With below average scores in my mocks, I was disheartened and thought to go for exam only to take an experience.

Exam Experience:
During my exam, I started with Verbal and in the middle of section felt perplexed as my timing was way better than my mocks. This made me feel if I had a lot of wrong attempts and was doing bad. I found the level of RC's bit different then what I had practiced. I lost my composure in the middle, and at the end of section had to mark second last question randomly, and couldn't mark the last question.

With a break I came back for Quant, and didn't sweat much as was confident on lot of questions and there weren't much questions from PnC or Equality (which I struggle in higher difficulty). I randomly marked a question or two, which I felt would consume much of time.

ESR Evaluation:
In my opinion, my performance in CR is not indicative of my mock performances. I had good accuracy in CR, but don't know why such a score. I had planned I would skimp through Power Score once in the last leg, but couldn't do so and now it bother's me.

I have attached my ESR below and wish to seek suggestions on how to go ahead and increase my verbal score. I wish to get 730+, as I am relying on scholarships for MBA programs.

I also want to know if I am missing anything in my ESR and what more insights I can gather from it?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Some interesting info available in your ESR:

1. Verbal - You got easy questions wrong in quarters 2 and 4. You spent less time on them so you likely found them easy too. But you got them wrong. It means you missed something simple or made some careless errors. Do you read the question stem properly before marking the answer to ensure you are answering exactly what is asked? There were 4 such mistakes and that is a pattern. Combined with the last question that you left unmarked, you would have earned a huge penalty.

2. Quant - The questions you got wrong were rather hard and you let them go quickly. Good call!

Your score in Construction/Plan is significantly less than that in Analysis/Critique.
Check this video to find out the question types that are a part of Construction/Plan: https://youtu.be/1LjFJp7QkTw?si=C889bIFEAb9pD6lI

and as BB said, do not evaluate your performance during the test based on your evaluation of the difficulty level of the questions you are getting. What you may consider easy may not be so in reality. Also, there could be many reasons why you may get an easy question e.g. if one topic area has not been covered yet but the parameters the software wants to judge are available in a simpler question etc. Let the software do its job; you just do your own.

Hi Kattu404,

First off, a 680/Q50 is a strong Score, so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. As such, a retest might not be necessary. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement (and the more time that you have to act on that advice, the better). There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admissio ... tants-124/

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for - and before we get into the data in your ESR - it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) Over the last few months, did you choose to study more often? During that time, how many hours did you typically study each week? Did you take any "time off" from your studies over the last 6 months?
2) Did you take any of the CATs/mocks more than once?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi Rich,
Thank you for the advice.

Yes, I think I can apply to my first choice B schools with the present score. However, as I see for most of the T25 B schools the second round of application deadline is around Jan beginning, I feel to re attempt to stand a better chance at Scholarships.
Thank you for suggestion on forum, I will look into it.

Information on my study schedule:
1) Over the last few months, did you choose to study more often? During that time, how many hours did you typically study each week? Did you take any "time off" from your studies over the last 6 months?
> There had been several instance's (around 4-5) when I had a considerable gap of a week or so in these six months. This was partly due to some personal reasons and some work commitments.

2) Did you take any of the CATs/mocks more than once?
> I didn't take any of the mocks more than once except for the first official mock. (However I took that mock from different account during repeated instance)

3) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?
> I wish to complete my applications within Round 2 of admission cycles.
I shall be applying for few Indian B Schools (IIMA, ISB) and most Top 25 B schools. (Insead, HEC Paris, Chicago Booth, IESE, Tepper, NUS, Esade, IE, Emory, etc.)
I am weighted more towards Indian B Schools, however if there is scholarship on offer for schools based in USA/Europe I will be inclined to pursue those schools.

Congrats on 680. It’s a good base but sorry it’s way below your practice tests. I’m not certain you need to wait two months to take the test again.

I think most of your performance can be attributed to leaving a question and answered and obviously the big elephant which is doing the big no-no, which is trying to analyze your performance while you’re taking a test. Trying to gauge how you’re doing on the test as a fools errand and I really really do not recommend thinking or worrying about it. Don’t try to feel good or bad, instead take it one question at a time and do your best.

I think you can retake within two weeks and as long as you don’t worry about your performance, I feel you can pull it up to 730.

PS. Keep in mind that some of the official practice tests like test five and six have fairly easy questions. Some real GMAT tests likely also have many easy questions and not many hard questions. You never know what database is given to you. Make sure you stick with your timing and that’s really mostly it…

Hi BB,
Thank you for the appreciation and thank you for creating such a good forum. Without GMAT CLUB FORUM, my preparation would not have been structured and I really would have struggled. I am grateful to you and your team and to all the experts engaged on this forum!

I agree with you on the "analyze part during the exam", I suppose I will need to work on that.
This can also be attributed to the fact that I had planned I will be inculcating a daily habit of solving 3-4 RC's (in the last month prior to exam) but failed to do so, and when I faced few difficult questions and an uncomfortable passage, I was taken aback in my mindset.
I will try to improvise on this, and set realistic goals this time.

For official test mocks in my experience I felt the first and second mock (which are freely available) were easy then the 3rd to 6th.
But this could also be because I might have seen the question s of 1-2 mock earlier.

Hi Karishma,
Thank you for the insights on ESR and thank you for the engagement on this forum as well. I recollect seeing time and again your answers to some difficult questions help me with better understanding.

I can understand the point of careless error's, I saw this happen in one of the mock as well. (In one of the mock, I had most of the 500-600 level SC questions wrong). I do try to read the question stem properly, but have found myself at times missing on some aspects.
Can you suggest any advice to avoid careless mistakes?

I will check the questions of construction plan, and I will try to be in a better mindset the next time.
Thank you for the advice!

Hi Kattu404,

First off, you crushed quant, so great job there! Regarding verbal, based on the scores of your official mock exams (as well as your real GMAT), it's clear that you need to spend some time improving your verbal skills before a retake. With that in mind, do you need some advice, in general, on how to improve your GMAT verbal skills?
