Hello,
If anyone would like to offer their perspective on my current applicant profile, I would appreciate the advice and feedback!
Demographics/Stats
White, Male, 24, USA
GPA: 3.93 (summa cum laude) from a US public Ivy
GMAT: 710 (48Q/41V/8 IR/6 AWA)
Will apply in either R1 2020 or R1 2021
Work Experience
Current: 1 year, 2 months as a Marketing Research Assistant for a US professional sports league
Highlights - Manage a $500k data acquisition program and reduced acquisition costs by 25% in year 1; Received merit raise 4x the company average
Previous: 1 year as an Athletics Marketing Assistant for a top US college athletics department
Note - This was a defined one-year program for recent grads with extra professional development opportunities, with the goal of propelling you to another role in the sports industry
Highlights - Increased average fan attendance across 2 sports with reduced marketing budgets in each
I also have a very unique 3 year internship experience as an undergrad in my institution's athletic department (that ended up being ~ 20 hrs per week) where I was asked to lead a major initiative on the department's #1 priority. This involved leading a group of 40 other students and those efforts resulted in multiple attendance/sales records, and were featured in an industry magazine. (Will adcoms "accept" this given it took place while an undergraduate?)
Extracurriculars
Volunteer Coach - Volunteer with a national non-profit that teaches core life skills/values to kids through the game of golf
Alumni Mentor - Annual participant in my alma mater's formal student mentorship program. Each year I've mentored a student interested in working in the sports industry. This year, I helped my mentee secure a job with an MLB franchise
MBA Goals
Long Term: Be a senior leader in the sports industry - this could be in media, talent agency, with a league, team, etc. A role that allows me to help drive sports forward and continue their important role as a unifier in society
Short Term: Transition into consulting to build my strategic problem solving skills and gain experience leading complex business solutions.
The sports industry has shifted to where it is no longer exclusively former pro athletes/coaches in the top leadership roles. Now, the industry is valuing those from different professional backgrounds to tackle the many facets of the sports industry such as the evolution of streaming, sports wagering, etc.

Hi, and thanks for writing! You definitely are making great strides towards a thriving career in sports management. Regarding application timing, I do recommend waiting until R1 2021 to apply since you have 2 years of work experience so far - in the meantime, keep progressing in your current role (perhaps a promotion is on the horizon?) and consistently seek opportunities for increased responsibility and impact. Also, start/continue building relationships with potential recommenders. It's also great how you're so involved in the community, so keep up the leadership and impact there as well!
I think your target schools make sense - I'd also add Duke Fuqua and UNC Kenan-Flagler to your list. For your reach schools, a higher GMAT score can only help (Kellogg and Wharton's average scores are between 720 and 730).
Regarding your internship experience - while it won't count towards your full-time experience, it certainly adds value to your profile and reinforces the logic of yoyr career goals.
