Hello,
I would request you to please evaluate my profile and help me in answering a few questions regarding the same. My profile details are as given below and I have my questions at the absolute end.
Demographic: 27 years old, Indian Male
GMAT: Target 700-750 by August. [Currently Preparing]
Academics:
• 10th Grade: 10.0 CGPA (out of 10.0)
• 12th Grade: 94.5% ( out of 100 )
• Undergrad: Bachelors in Computer Science Engineering from NIT Durgapur (CGPA: 8.80, out of 10.0)
Work Experience: 4 years as of July’21.
I worked at Oracle for 2 years and currently working for Goldman Sachs.
My experience has majorly been in the domain of Computer Science and Product related development. In Goldman Sachs, however, I was exposed to Financial and Banking domains as well and have got a good domain knowledge about the same.
My responsibilities at both organizations included individual development of various products and certain leadership skills such as leading a team of a few junior analysts/developers.
Extra-curricular:
• I was a member of the programming societies of my college focusing on Computer Science knowledge and helping students garner the skills required for an industry job.
• I have also participated in various NGO activities from Goldman Sachs: I have worked with various Non-Profit Organizations to reach out to the weaker section of the society, for Education and Workforce Development, and Environmental Sustainability.
• I play a musical instrument, Synthesizer, and have participated in a couple of musical talent shows in school/college.
• I was a part of the Inter-School Cricket team for 2 years. (2008-10)
Other Information:
• I have a research paper published in a journal along with my PhD Guide and Professor while I was in the pre-final year of college.
• I have done some research work in a very reputed institute (IIT Kharagpur) in the final year of college.
• I participated in a Hackathon ( an ethical hacking contest ) organized by Microsoft in which my team (4 people) stood 23rd all over India (around 5000 teams participated).
• I have been in the top 5% of the students who appeared for the Grade 12th Board Exam from my school.
• I have been in the top 5% of the students in my college department.
Target Colleges:
I am looking to target the following B-Schools for the class of 2022:
• Top 10 Global Universities.
• ISB
Please let me know if this is a realistic target and if this can be achieved with the score that I have in mind as a target. Also, I do have good recommenders from top B-schools, working in top Investment Banks, and know me well.
Do let me know if I have to furnish more details.

Hi, Arpan, hope you are well. Your profile is heavy on a lot of details that don't necessarily matter that much for the MBA process (high school details, activities from 10 years ago) and light on some that are really important, so it's too hard for me to judge your chances! The most important factors in the above that are missing are your GMAT score and the details of your accomplishments and impact at work (individual development of various projects and certain leadership skills such as leading a team could involve a lot of things; this is pretty vague). What's your role in the organization, and what exactly is linking your past to your future. What ARE your goals? Have you put some thought into what you want out of your MBA? I think you would really benefit from some more time constructing your goals and researching programs with different levels of selectivity that are good at placing students into those roles. Without a GMAT yet, that's hard to do, but as a rule of thumb, assume that as a candidate in a very well represented group of applicants, you will need to outperform whatever the GMAT averages are for the programs in question by about 30-40 points. So, if you get a 700, look for schools in your "target" range that have 660-670 averages or so. If you get a 750, you might set your sights a bit higher, with target schools in the 710 area. When you write your essays, work hard to demonstrate clear goals and a strong fit with the programs in question. Because so many apply though from your demographic, do add safer options as well.
