Stanford MSx: The new 2025-2026 essay requirements
The 2025-2026 admissions season is officially underway for the Stanford MSx program. Stanford has released its new essays and application requirements for the 2025-2026 cycle. Here are the new essay requirements, along with some advice about how to approach them.
Personal EssaysStanford has revised its MSx essay requirements by changing the topic of the second required essay and establishing specific word limits for each of the two core required essays. (Last year, the second essay focused on “Why Stanford,” and candidates were free to decide the length of each essay, up to a maximum of slightly over 1000 words.)
Here are some instructions that Stanford provides as you think about how you will reply to the essay questions:
“The essays are a key aspect of your application and are designed to inspire thoughtful reflection. Your essays help us understand what character traits have propelled you in your career and tell us how the Stanford MSx (Master’s in Management) Program is integral to maximizing your impact in the world after receiving your full-time, one-year master’s degree in management.... In each essay, we want to hear your genuine voice. Think carefully about your values, passions, aims, and dreams. There is no “right answer” to these questions — the best answer is the one that is truest for you.”
Essay OneThe first required essay remains Stanford’s classic
“What matters most to you, and why?” This essay can be up to 650 words, and Stanford advises that, “[f]or this essay, we would like you to reflect deeply and write from the heart. Once you’ve identified what matters most to you, help us understand why. You might consider, for example, what makes this so important to you? What people, insights, or experiences have shaped your perspectives?”
Essay TwoThe new second required essay focuses on the Stanford MSx community and asks,
“How do you plan to support and enhance the experience of your classmates and the learning community at Stanford GSB?” This essay can be up to 200 words.
Essay Three There is a third essay that is required only if a candidate is applying jointly to both the full-time MBA and MSx programs. It asks,
“Why Stanford?”Stanford states that you should “[d]escribe your aspirations and how your Stanford MSx experience will help you realize them. Why is this the right time for you to pursue your master’s degree at Stanford GSB?” This essay can be up to 350 words.
It is important to note that Stanford has said, “We often find effective essays written in far fewer words.”
Career goals short essayStanford also asks about your career aspirations in a short, required essay. This question asks,
“How will the Stanford MSx Program, along with your experiences, skills, and network, help you achieve your career goals?”Optional EssaysYou also have the opportunity to write optional essays. Stanford has modified this section by opening them to topics beyond the “impact essays” found in the application over the last few years. Stanford advises that through this year’s optional essays, “we ask you to tell us about who you are and how you think Stanford will help you achieve your aspirations. We are also interested in learning about the things you have done that are most meaningful to you. Using these optional spaces, perhaps you would like to expand upon a bullet item from your resume and tell us more about the “how” or “why” behind the “what.” Or maybe you have had a significant impact outside of work in a way that doesn’t fit neatly in another part of the application. You are welcome to share up to three examples (up to 1,200 characters, or approximately 200 words, for each example).” The specific optional question is:
"Think about a time in the past five years you’ve created a significant positive impact, whether in professional, extracurricular, civic, or academic settings. What was the situation, what did you do, and what was the impact."Abundance of contentCompared with many other top executive-level programs, the Stanford MSx application provides many essays through which you can present your case for admission. You should showcase both how you will be a unique addition to their student body and how their program aligns excellently with your needs. Take great care to pack a lot of important details into the small essay spaces. This will likely mean you need to rewrite your essays many times to make them concise, persuasive, and memorable.
