There is no "essays" section in the Chicago Booth application this year.
Only a "short answer" section with 4 short questions to be answered only in a few lines.
This is a dramatic change.
What does this mean?
It means that long essays, which gave deep personal glimpses into an applicant's journey's, their struggles, their aspirations and how they can add value to Booth are gone.
Perhaps this is a change driven by too much use of AI because of which most essay writings have become impersonal, generic and banal. Which obviously doesn't work.
So now, how to make a strong application that will impress the admissions team?
We recommend our students to leverage each part of the application to their advantage.
Let me walk you through our approach.
In the Chicago Booth application, there are ample opportunities to showcase distinctiveness of your profile. How you utilize those spaces with strategy, insight, and attention to detail will be critical for making a strong application.
1. EMPLOYMENT:
For each job description you get 700 characters. Here you talk about your role, your leadership experiences, your projects, the people and budgets you managed, and notable impact. You can list different positions and promotions within the same company as separate entries. So, if you've had promotions, you get lots of space to talk about your professional journey in each job.
2. ACHIEVEMENTS:
Booth application gives you UNLIMITED space to talk about your professional and academic achievements.
Please list any significant professional awards or recognition that you have received.
Please list any academic honors, awards, or other recognitions you have received.
In each of these sections, you can write 500-700 words or more if you have enough content to talk about your achievements.
Clearly Booth is placing strong impact on attracting accomplished individuals.
If you have been taking initiative, been determined to fight all odd and making things happen and creating positive impact, you would have amazing things to write here!
An AI can't quickly cook up an essay for you here. You have to have lived a rich, ambitious, inspiring life. And then know what and how to communicate that effectively.
3. ACIVITIES:
Booth application has one of the most extensive extracurricular sections!
For many years, Booth would ask this MBA essay "An MBA is as much about personal growth as it is about professional development. In addition to sharing your experience and goals in terms of career, we’d like to learn more about you outside of the office. Use this opportunity to tell us something about who you are." And they'd give you almost unlimited space to write about yourself.
This year you don't have that essay.
BUT! you have the activity section where you can write even 20+ activities. For each activity you get 75 words to explain description and reason for participation.
Assuming you have about 10 activities - that gives you 750 words to showcase who you are outside of work!
Don't miss this opportunity!
4. PERSONAL HISTORY
Booth also gives you an opportunity to talk about any aspects of your upbringing or family situations that you want to share.
Is there anything about your upbringing or family/household circumstances that you would like the Admissions Committee to know? No word limit here.
Many business schools welcome the chance to know about your personal struggles and difficult family situations, so know you better, to understand your character, to see more clearly the person behind all the amazing achievements.
If you have strong, impactful life experiences, you can write about them here.
5. RECOMMENDATION
Booth asks you Why did you choose this recommender? No word limit
While this might seem an administrative question, you can utilize the space to shed light on your relationship/ dynamics with your recommender.
6. ADDITIONAL INFO
Is there any unclear information in your application that needs further explanation or additional details you would like to share with the Admissions Committee?
Most students might leave this blank as it's an optional section. But if used wisely, you can talk about additional details from your profile that will help make a strong case for your admission to Chicago Booth.
