Hey teleste!

-2/3 tuition at Anderson & Owen.
-Not 100% committed to HOP/HR but leaning towards it. If I don't go that route I would probably want to do tech product/program management.
-Definitely committed to either the coasts (I've lived in Chicago before and ruled out the Midwest afterwards) or the South (Nashville area) long term since I have family there.

According to their websites, that means Ross will run you $93k/year all in, and Anderson $58k/year.

Ross: https://michiganross.umich.edu/graduate ... ancial-aid
Anderson: https://www.anderson.ucla.edu/degrees/f ... /financing

With all this in mind, if I were you, I would try to squeeze some money out of Ross. If they wouldn't budge, I'd probably go to Anderson. (And I say that reluctantly as a happy Owen grad.) If you were sure you wanted to do HR, and you were willing to live anywhere, I would say negotiate for more money at Owen, get (close to) a full ride, and go there. However, since you're not dead-set on HR, and you really want to be on the coasts, the other two options are better in your situation. Ann Arbor and LA will be very different MBA experiences. I can imagine great upsides to either option. (I particularly love the MAP program at Ross--but I wouldn't pay $70k more for it, as you potentially would over two years to go to UMich.) I'd ultimately lean towards Anderson if I were in your shoes, to avoid taking on $70k additional debt and to be located on the West Coast, but this will be a tough call.

Good luck with the decision!

I don't know too much about the negotiation process - any advice on how to approach it?

There is no blueprint. A few people on the forum were successful but the other 80% or so seem to get a negative answer. The ones that do succeed often have to sign a non-disclosure. Schools don't love negotiating and turning admissions process into an auction house with you at the center.

It has to be sincere and personal. It works in those cases but I feel the folks who shake trees to see what falls out are the ones who usually get turned away. (meaning, you are not one of them, so your chances should be better). I can see approaching your adcom member (hopefully you befriended one) and checking if there may be any fellowship opportunities and explain that since you will not be heading to consulting or another high-pay area, you are quite sensitive to this type of thing and while Ross is #1 in your book, it is a lot harder to justify it rather than taking a full scholarship.

Good Luck!

I think Ross is stronger than Anderson. I would call Ross and try to negotiate a scholarship. If successful, i would go to Ross, if not then Anderson.

Thank you all for your insights here! I got off the waitlist at Dartmouth (with about half as much $$ as Owen/Anderson offered me) a few days after I last posted on this thread, and although it was a very tough decision, I decided to enroll at UCLA Anderson!
