BackgroundUndergrad: Top 20 school (non-Ivy)
Hometown: PNW
Location: Los Angeles
Pre-MBA: IB -> Broadcast Television (e.g. Comcast, WarnerMedia, Disney)
Post-MBA Plan: Build career in media, potentially launch a new business concept in space (but not 100% sure)
WhartonPros- Brand (slightly better, may be more important if ultimately decide to leave media. wonder whether the difference matters long-term)
- Fit (more academically oriented, ambition quotient through the roof at Wharton, many mutual friends in program)
- Community (better opportunity to form real bonds rather than competing for classmates' time in NYC)
- Recruiting (marginal, but have been told some high profile opportunities go through H/S/W that do not reach CBS... also benefit to some degree with brand boost)
Cons- Location (Phili is fine, but not where it's at for media... not going to be building my network bopping around the city)
- Interest specific network (less alumni in media to call upon for help)
ColumbiaPros- Alumni (strong media presence)
- Multiple internships (flexibility to do a part-time internship while in school)
- Location (wow, the campus, have heard awesome things about New York too, many friends in the city that would be cool to reunite with)
Cons- Work / Life / School Balance (with part-time intern opps, friends in the city, etc., many distractions to get the most out of MBA network / social experience)
- Community (understand the feeling isn't commuter vibe, but significant portion of class not moving, already established in NYC)
- Brand (may be edged out on brand factor v. H/S/W competition... hard to hear from people at CBS that they would have gone to Wharton if admitted... of course each decision is personal though)
- Facilities (my inner city public high school was nicer than what I saw of the CBS building)
No MBAPros- Money (two year earning trajectory at risk given covid, but savings on tuition are real)
- Experience (meaningful work experience - especially managing change during these times will be of value - people in media respect years in the business)
- Stress Avoidance (no benchmarking oneself against classmates, reconsideration of media interest for traditional paths reopened by MBA, no leaving behind a life that I've grown comfortable in)
***don't need an mba in media
Cons- Executive level promotions (ten to fifteen years from now when and
if up for SVP -> EVP promotion, may get passed on for the competition with MBA... but ten to fifteen years from now will people care about the MBA like they do today?)
- Missed opportunity (would enhance pedigree / brand as well as meet classmates and professors who may change my personal and professional life)
- Wasted some time and money applying (but honestly, would recommend spending the ~150 hours and $1K applying to b-school to anyone... an incredibly valuable professional development reflection in itself)
Many thanks for any additional guidance or advice you may be willing to offer. I feel incredibly fortunate to have these opportunities (and the many that have preceded these options)... on one hand, the prospect of passing seems foolish, but I also recognize that I, not the degree, will drive the success of my career
