pannierstrasse
Hi everyone,
I’m planning to apply to the LBS MBA and would love an honest assessment of my chances + any advice.
Profile:
Age: 35 now, will be
36 when classes startGMAT Focus: 655
Nationality: Turkish & German (dual)
GPA: 3.75 - Reputable uni in Turkey
Work Experience: ~10 years
- Product Management roles in startups across Istanbul, Berlin, and London
- Short experience in VC
- Currently at a well-known fintech company
Post MBA goal: VC
Questions:- How competitive is this profile for LBS? Any recommendations to make it stronger?
- Does being 36 at the start significantly hurt my chances?
- Is 655 a safe GMAT for LBS, or should I retake?
Thanks for sharing your profile
pannierstrasse. Your age shall not be a barrier, but it changes the committee’s lens. Everything else in your profile, dual nationality, 10 years of cross-border PM experience, startup + fintech exposure, touchpoints with VC, would actually appeal to LBS. With a stronger test score OR very compelling essays + career clarity, you can be competitive. Recently, most of the LBS Applicants who worked with Shantanu (INSEAD Alumnus, Founder and Admissions Consultant,
MBA and Beyond) received Interview Invites.
Happy to share that we had the opportunity to work with the Vice President of Commercial Strategy & Category Management, who, with 8.5 years of experience and a 685 GMAT FE score, secured an LBS admit.LBS Class Benchmarks You Should Know: Average GMAT classic: ~700-708 | GMAT FE 645 (it's always better to have 20, 30+ points than the average score), Work Experience Range: 3-15 years, Average Age: 29, Age Range: approx. 24-39
Your age does not disqualify you, but the admissions team can ask: “Will the ROI of the MBA make sense for a 36-year-old aiming for VC?”
VC is known to be competitive and more relationship/pedigree-driven. So they want to see an ultra-clear and realistic plan.
Talking about your strengths: 10 years of Product + Tech + international mobility. Istanbul > Berlin > London is a good narrative. LBS values global exposure.
Dual nationality: This gives you diversity points, especially because Turkey is considered an underrepresented geography, and Germany gives you EU flexibility.
Fintech + startup + light VC exposure: This combination can align well with your post-MBA VC goals if pitched correctly.
Your good academic background (GPA 3.75) mitigates concerns about GMAT to some degree.
Things that would matter: Your age is not a deal-breaker, but it shifts the expectations: LBS will scrutinize your career plan heavily. They will expect strong leadership evidence. They will check maturity and ROI. They will compare you to other experienced PMs and operators applying at this stage.
VC as post-MBA goal: Its recruiting can be notoriously competitive and often favours deep technical/domain expertise, prior investing experience, and networks in the region. You’ll need a clear bridge from Product > VC. You can take a look at this

VC schools prefer candidates who are operators with domain expertise, not generic VC-hopefuls.
For example: Fintech infrastructure VC, Payments + consumer credit VC, SaaS infrastructure VC in Europe, Emerging markets fintech VC (Turkey/MENA/Bangladesh-type markets). Your essays might need a very market-specific narrative.
Focus on building a strong “Why now?” explanation. At 36, LBS will ask, "Why isn’t an EMBA a better fit?" Your answer should highlight the desire for a full-time career pivot, immersive London ecosystem exposure, and recruiting for VC/funds that primarily hire from FT MBA talent pools, global startup networks found specifically in the FT MBA programs. LBS clubs (PE/VC Club, Tech & Media Club) and London VC ecosystems.
Your recommenders must highlight leadership, strategic thinking, ownership, cross-cultural team management, and your potential to be an investor/product leader. Start networking early with LBS alumni
