I am planning to apply to ISB in Sep 2024. Request for a profile evaluation and  guidance on weaker areas.

Academics

10th: 9.4 CGPA
12th: 92% 
B.E in Mechanical Engineering : 8.2 CGPA from one of the top state colleges in Karnataka 
GMAT: 720 (Classic GMAT)

Work Exp

-4 years work experience in the Automotive industry 
-Worked on and led several high impact Marketing projects impacting company revenue in the last 4 years
-Mentorship for new joiners

Extra circulars

-Published a research paper as part of final year project
-Was part of automotive club of college. Led a team of 3 in my time at the automotive club  
-Have been learning piano after i graduated college. Have completed grade 3 trinity exam and will finish grade 4 by the end of this year.

Hsw0198y hope this finds you well For starters, your academic arc is decent. But what I especially like about your profile is that you've worked in the automotive sector on the Marketing side. I too come from the automotive background, but I spent almost half a decade on core R&D type of projects and I feel having an early exposure to how strong marketing perceptions are created will help you stand out. Surely make that the highlight of your profile. But at the same time, also note that sometimes marketing folks can fail to convey the real impact of their work especially if they come from more traditional sectors like automotive etc. They often only cite enhancing brand value as their major accomplishments. From a b-school point of view, marketers should have a better sense of how your actions such as campaigns translated into sales and other tangible metrics, but most importantly how their messaging targeted respective marketing channels and impacted traffic. Write deep stories for the essays with human sentiment at the core but do not miss the big picture behind the objective of an MBA. Strategy and consulting goals are generic. You would have to go deeper to find the connecting themes between marketing and consulting. If you dont think it through, this could pull you down at a later stage in the process. @Hsw0198y - some thoughts: 1. The academic arc looks good, assuming Q/ V split of GMAT was balanced too. Would like to understand your work-ex and impact better but broadly, Marketing within the Automoative sector is an interesting angle. Were there any promotions? 2. It'd be crucial to have a strong narrative covering: why consulting? which domains/ sub-domains within consulting (if generalist, then what are your transferable skills)? what skill-set gaps would an MBA (and particularly ISB) help you fulfil and how? 3. Your music/ piano involvement adds a good angle to the ExtraCurriculars. Would like to understand your broader journey better, to assess peaks and troughs. Good, well-rounded profile overall with no such red flags. You're a competitive applicant for ISB. That said, applying to just one B-School is not the best strategy due to the odds of randomness involved in the admission process. So you should also consider a few more schools from the T20-T30 schools where your profile maybe competitive. The rest is just the application part of it ensuring stellar Resume, Essay and LOR material and Interview prep. All of which, a professional can help with. Hey! Your acads are good and you have a good GMAT too. It's good that you have worked on revenue impacting marketing projects which can act as a USP in your case. On a personal front, piano can be used as an experience on one of the essays along with your research paper information. Since you have already worked in automotive sesctor, the automotive club will not add much value now (if you were in a different domain and you wanted to get into automotive, then it would have helped). Coming to strategy consulting, majority of the students want to get into strategy consulting and some are from the consulting background already. So, you will have to be very articulative in your essays about how you intend to get into consulting post MBA and what aspects of your prior experience will help you. Your academics, and your GMAT score are good and they are not going to be the deal breakers in your admission process.

While your 4 years of work experience adds heft to your application (which we are sure you'll back it up with a solid resume), you'll need a strong storyline as to why you want to pursue Strategy consulting post MBA, connecting your need for ISB to help achieve your goals. Especially when you have a marketing experience in automotive industry and are looking to highlight your extra curriculars in the same domain as your experience. Strategy consulting is the #1 choice for ISB aspirants, and you need to show why they must pick you over the others.

It is nice that you are learning Piano - try to think of how you are willing to contribute to the cohort with this skill set of yours (music clubs, etc.).

Therefore, there is work needed to be done in your application - essays, LOR and of course, the interview itself.

From the information that you have shared here, you are all set to go ahead and apply. There is always room for doing something more, you can evaluate the possible initiatives you can be a part of and get involved in those over the period.

ISB admission process has always been a very competitive process, it was never as simple as having the best grades, the GMAT and a stellar work ex. Being the best amongst equals is where you have to be to get in!

What will help you make the cut really is the strong narrative that you present, and how deep you go to establish your fit.

Though no single journey ever emulates the other completely, but there may be some parallels; here is an  ISB PGP admit story  somewhat similar to yours which may be useful for you.

That is an interesting set of profile parameters. After evaluation, this is what we think:

A classic 720 from an 8.2 CGPA mechanical engineering degree is read alongside the profile it accompanies, and in this case the combination tells a reader two things quickly: quantitative foundation is not the concern, but the four years in automotive marketing need to carry most of the weight from here.

- "Led several high-impact marketing projects impacting company revenue" is where ISB readers will stop and need more. Without revenue figures, team sizes, or client or stakeholder scope, the line describes a role rather than a career, and the automotive marketing segment at ISB is contested enough that generic phrasing doesn't distinguish anyone.
- Four years is right in ISB's working window, but progression matters more than tenure. If those four years show a move from execution to ownership, with evidence of decisions made rather than tasks completed, the file reads differently than four years of strong individual contribution.
- Strategy consulting as a post-MBA goal is common in this pool, and ISB readers have seen it without a bridge many times. The question they're asking is what in the automotive marketing experience makes this person's path to consulting more credible than the next applicant's, because the goal alone does no work.
- The piano detail is worth using, and not for the reason most applicants assume. Grade 3 to Grade 4 Trinity examinations are structured, externally assessed, and show sustained discipline outside a professional context; that's different from listing a hobby.

The strongest angle here is actually four years in a single, technically complex industry, which is more unusual in a consulting-track ISB pool than a 720.
