These are the details of my profile (GEM):
Education:
10th Standard: 9.2 CGPA
12th Standard: 85.6%
B.Tech: Electrical Engineering from Nirma University (7.68 CGPA)
Work Experience:
Industry: 4.6 years of experience in IT and Tech Consulting.
Role: Currently serving as a Technical Consultant specializing in SAP MDG.
Target:
Exam: GMAT Focus Edition
Goal: ISB Round 1 Admission (Targeting 2027 Intake / 1-Year Program)
Any suggestions on my profile and tips for GMAT prep (tentative target score) alongside an ongoing 9-5 job would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  Overall profile is decent but sits in a crowded pool 
 GEM + IT consulting + SAP MDG is a very common ISB applicant combination. Nothing here is a red flag, but nothing stands out yet either. Admission will depend less on eligibility and more on how well you differentiate your story.  
  Your work needs stronger positioning, not more content 
 Instead of describing your role as SAP consulting, position it around business impact. SAP MDG sits at the core of enterprise data and decision-making. Show how your work influenced processes, decisions, or stakeholders, not just systems or implementations.  
  GMAT will play a critical role in your case 
 With average academics, GMAT becomes your biggest lever. A score in the 685+ range (Focus Edition) will make you competitive for Round 1, while anything closer to 695+ gives you a stronger safety margin.  
  You need at least one clear spike in your profile 
 Right now, the profile feels well-rounded but not distinctive. You should demonstrate ownership or leadership through a specific initiative, project, or measurable impact. Even a small but clearly owned effort can significantly strengthen your application.  
  Your career narrative needs to be intentional and cohesive 
 You need to clearly connect your current work, the insights you’ve gained, and what you want to do post-MBA. Avoid generic goals. The story should feel like a natural progression, not a sudden switch driven by the MBA. 
Last but not the least,  Add a strong extracurricular leadership story 
 Showcase initiative outside work with measurable impact, ownership, and clear outcomes demonstrating leadership potential. It can be something small scale but give a picture of impact creation.  
If you execute well on these areas, your profile can move from average to genuinely competitive for ISB.

4.5 years is a decently long time to be in one industry. How has your career progressed in this time frame? This is the most critical piece in any MBA admissions process. I hope you already know that you come from the most crowded pool of applicants, so what uniqueness do you bring through your professional knowledge and capabilities that will help you contribute uniquely and meaningfully to the PGP class, as well as position you strategically in front of recruiters at ISB?
You did not mention your post-PGP goals. This is the most common mistake that applicants make. You need to look at your entire work history from the POV of the goals that you want to achieve after the MBA, and that should help you understand which parts of your experience should be highlighted and in what manner.
What kind of projects have you worked on (implementations, rollouts, support)? What changed because of your work? How large were the clients, teams, or datasets? What are your core skills beyond SAP implementation? Do you understand business fundamentals for example supply chain design, process optimization, or data-driven decision-making? What is your underlying knowledge area that would create tangible value for a business? A high score is non-negotiable. Think upwards of 685.

For ISB, aim for a GMAT Focus score of 675–695+ to stay competitive, especially given the GEM pool. Make sure you highlight business impact and progression in your career trajectory, not just technical execution. Extracurriculars will also play an important role, so showcase leadership, initiative, or achievements beyond work. The academics are decent overall, and 4.5+ years in SAP MDG/tech consulting is actually a good space to be in because ISB sees many applicants from enterprise tech backgrounds. The key now is how well you differentiate your impact and story from the larger IT crowd.
A few things that would strengthen your profile further: 
 
  Try to clearly showcase ownership and business impact in your work rather than only technical execution. Things like client-facing responsibilities, process improvements, stakeholder management, mentoring juniors, cost savings, automation impact, etc. matter a lot.  
  If possible before applying, aim for at least one strong promotion, leadership initiative, or high-impact project that gives you sharper examples for essays/interviews.  
  Since you are targeting Round 1 for 2027 intake, you actually have good time to build the profile thoughtfully instead of rushing the application.   
 For GMAT Focus, do not prepare with a “safe score” mindset. Prepare with the intention of maximizing your percentile. For your profile category, a strong GMAT can make a very meaningful difference. Consistency over long hours is what usually works best with a full-time job.
A few things that help while managing prep alongside work: 
 
  Daily study consistency matters more than weekend marathons.  
  Quant is usually manageable for engineers, so spend serious effort on Verbal accuracy and Data Insights speed.  
  Mock analysis is more important than the number of mocks.  
  Avoid delaying mocks until you “finish the syllabus.” Start early.   
 Overall, this is definitely a workable ISB profile. Nothing here looks like a red flag. The application quality, career storytelling, and GMAT performance will decide how competitive it becomes. Wishing you the best, you are planning early, which already puts you ahead of many applicants.

bhavya1999  Your profile actually has more going for it than you are giving yourself credit for, and the SAP MDG specialization is a sharper hook than generic IT consulting if you frame it right. The 4.6 years at R1 submission also lands you in ISB's sweet spot for the 1-year PGP, so you are not fighting the experience curve here.

- SAP MDG is not just a tech skill, it is the spine of how large enterprises trust their own data. Adcoms and recruiters read MDG work as exposure to data governance, master data strategy, and cross-functional alignment across finance, supply chain, and sales. That is a much more interesting story than saying you are an SAP consultant, and very few in your applicant pool can credibly tell it.
- On the GMAT, aim for the Focus 685 to 695 band if you can. Given the GEM pool density, a score in that range moves you from being filtered on academics to being read on story, which is exactly where you want the conversation to happen. Anything around 675 keeps you in the game but does not actively help you.
- One lever most in your pool underplay is the client side of consulting work. Pick two or three engagements where you influenced a business decision, saved cost, or unblocked a stakeholder, and build your essays and resume bullets around those, not the modules you configured.
- Post-MBA goals matter more than people realize at the profile stage. ISB's 1-year format gives you very little runway to pivot, so a believable goal like enterprise tech strategy, product management in SaaS, or tech-focused consulting will read far stronger than a vague "transition to general management."

Lock the GMAT first over the next three to four months, then let your story breathe. You are closer than you think.
