Hi all. I am currently undergrad student. My GPA is good enough for any business school. I'm interested in finance Ph.D. in USA. A friend of mine, who is doing his doctorate in Europe, suggested me that two main criteria are GPA and GMAT score. So basically, motivation and recommendation letters do not play great role. How true do you think is that?

Hey Rovshan16 - You cannot assign a specific % value of how much each GMAT, GPA, Recos and essay matter. In my opinion all 4 are vital cogs in your application, while you justify your shortcomings in one of them but then you need to excel in the other 3 to do so
In short, your motivation (which is conveyed through your essays) and recommendation letters are important

The motivation and recommendation letters are extremely important for admission to PhD programs. In many programs, the motivation essays are what will finally determine your chances, if you meet the averages of the other applicants. Many applicants who have had good GPAs and test scores have been rejected because they wrote poor motivation essays. These criteria apply to admissions in North American schools and others outside who follow similar procedures.
Admissions to European schools are generally based on somewhat different criteria. Some of them ask for research proposals and applicants are assessed based on these proposals. GPAs and test scores are still considered. But the motivation essay is not emphasized as much but still may be required.
