Thank You so much. The Solution you gave is easily understood and I like the multiple approach of solving this question.
Moreover, I had one more simpler problem question but I could not think of a solution to solve this problem using the “Change to the Mean” formula. Could you please help?

Mat gets a $1,000 commission on a big sale. This commission alone raises his aver- age commission by $150. If Mat's new average commission is $400, how many sales has Mat made?

Thanks,

Saket

hi,
again two ways..
1) info..
we are given that 250 was initial average..
1000 added has increased it by 150..
had the new amount been 250 , th eaverage would have remained 250..
so the addition of 750 has resulted in increase of average by 150..
so total sales=750/150=5..

2)Algebric way
you have to find values with the two different averages and then equate them to get the answer..
the avg after the last sale =400,
and prior to sale=400-150=250...
now let the initial sales be s, then final sales =s+1..
now equate..
400 * (s+1) = 250 * s +1000..
400s + 400 =250s + 1000..
150s=600..
s=4..
so total number of sales =4+1=5...
