I took a completely "blind" practice GMAT before picking up a book and doing any studying, got a 650 (46Q, 36V). I thought that was pretty good. I've been studying for a few months now (only got serious about it in like the past month). I've been focusing on Quant but also just went through all the Verbal MGMAT books to get a basic grasp on it.
I took a practice test this weekend and got a 680 (47Q, 41V). I have no idea how I got such a high verbal score without studying haha, but was pretty disappointed in my quant score. I’ve studied so much that I thought I’d at least be in the 90th percentile but I guess I was wrong!
Turns out I had timing issues. They aren’t as significant as the first test I took, but they are still a big problem. I totally miscalculated how to track time when I was doing the exam haha, so I thought I was on track until pretty close to the end when it became obvious that I wasn’t. The problem isn’t just seeing how on track I am generally but I also noticed that I was extremely off in how much time I thought I was spending on a given problem.
To show how bad this problem is, I got 16 questions wrong. Of those 16 incorrect, 7 of those were in the final 9 problems!
I also have a fairly rigid mind, and so sometimes when I get stuck on a problem I don’t know how to ‘start over’ to rethink the problem on what possible answers would be. I need to get my brain more flexible so it doesn’t get stuck in a dead end. Any suggestions?
I’m going to practice speed on RTD problems. I also need to get a firmer grasp on combinatorics. I picked up the MGMAT advanced quant book and I’m going to pore over that for a week or two.
Any suggestions? I’m open to everything! I think timing is my main issue at this point, but I don’t know how significant it played into the low score here. My goal is 730 as an absolute minimum, but would love to make it into the 99th percentile ideally.

Wow thanks for the info! I'm plowing through the OG Quant book right now, writing down ones I get wrong, then I'm going to go through and try the wrong ones again. Mostly silly mistakes and getting into a mental dead-end. I'm going to go back through the final 100 OG questions in each section, too, and do the same thing, then start taking GMAT club tests and MGMAT exams, all timed. I think I just haven't been error checking enough and/or doing enough practice problems.
