You'll see this most often when the problem asks something like this:

"What is the remainder when x is divided by 10?"

In this case, the remainder is the same as the units digit.

For instance, if you divide 1048103948234 by 10, you get a remainder of 4. 4 is also the units digit.

So, most commonly, this is a type of 'GMAT code' - just a sneaky way to ask for the units digit without saying those words.
