after the second step rewrite the equation as
\(x^2 y^2\) – 3xy+2xy – 6 = 0 (we get it by factoring)

Do you know how to factor the similar equation:
\(z^2\) – z - 6 = 0
?
When you factor that equation using any method, you end up with (z + 2)(z - 3) = 0.
If so, just think of this equation as being the same exact thing, except instead of z, it has "xy". \(x^2y^2\) is the same thing as \((xy)^2\) after all!
