Let the Volume of rain drop be x. Therefore volume of water = 0.75x
After 2ml of water evaporates, volume of water = 0.75x-2 This is given as 70 % of volume of rain drop, which is x-2 ( Since 2ml is evaporated in transit ) Therefore , 0.75x-2 = 0.7*(x-2) 0.05x = 0.6 x= 12
Since the question asks for the ORIGINAL VOLUME of the raindrop and the answer choices are NUMBERS, we can TEST THE ANSWERS.
We're told that a raindrop is 75% water and 25% dust. After 2ml of water evaporates, the raindrop is 70% water and 30% dust...
Since the answer choices are INTEGERS and the 2ml of evaporated water is ALSO an integer, we're likely looking for an ORIGINAL Volume that is a multiple of 4 (so the 75% calculation won't give us a decimal/fraction). There are two answers that 'fit' that pattern: A and D.
Let's TEST Answer A: 12 ml
If...Original Volume = 12ml 75% water = 9 ml 25% dust = 3 ml
After 2 ml of WATER evaporates... Volume = 12-2 = 10 ml Dust = 3 ml (it stays the same) Water = 10-3 = 7 ml
7/10 IS 70% water; this MATCHES what we were told, so this MUST be the answer.
