Though GMAT is testing the students, yet there are multiple problems in the question and the answers provided. Tricking and trapping to gauge smartness is one thing - providing unnecessary confusion in answers is another. In any case - below is one example.
1st Example - Modifier
Most of Portugal's 250,000 university students boycotted classes in a one-day strike to protest a law that requires(ing) them to contribute $330 a year more toward the cost of higher education, previously paying $7 per year.
A. year toward the cost of higher education, previously paying $7 per year
B. year toward the cost of higher education, for which was previously paid $7 per year
C. year, compared to the previously $7 per year, toward the cost of higher education
D. year toward the cost of higher education, instead of the $7 per year required previously
E. year as opposed to the $7 per year required previously for the cost of higher education
(D) is the answer. question is more "toward the cost" or "more towards the cost" or "more toward the costs"? I am all for testing one thing in a question at 600 level as long as other things are all correct
2nd example - Comparison
Employment costs rose 2.8 percent in the 12 months that ended in September, slightly less than they did in the year that ended in the previous quarter.
A. less than they did B. less than it did C. less than they were D. lower than
Cost is countable or uncountable? Cost vs Costs - There is singular and plural usage - "Costs rose less than they did"? vs "Cost rose less than it did"?
Best Usage?
Prices vary or Price varies? Costs rise vs Cost rises? Revenues Increase vs Revenue Increases vs Revenue Increase Increased demand vs increase in demand Decreased margin vs decrease in margin
