Though desert tortoises are well adapted to arid habitats, and adults can survive a year without access to water, they rely heavily on moisture in the vegetation consumed in spring, when they surface from their hibernal dormancy. The loss of native plants to grazing livestock and invasive plant species, then, may lessen the tortoise’s resistance to pathogens, though the tortoises do also dig precipitation basins in the soil and linger near one when rain is impending.
Q1:it's a X and Y structure. What's the XY?
X=The loss of native plants
Y=invasive plant species
or
X=grazing livestock
Y=invasive plant species

Hey,
I would like to point out that it’s not the case of compound subjects (ie X and Y). The subject in the above highlighted statement is “the loss of native plants”. The supposed X and Y in your understanding are the prepositional modifiers modifying the subject.
Rephrase of the sentence would be “The loss of native plants, due to grazing livestock and invasive plant species, may lessen the resistance to pathogens”

Q2:I don't really the meaning of "The loss of native plants to grazing livestock and invasive plant species", can you help me to rephrase it?
I'm not sure how to rephrase this, but it basically means that the livestock and invasive plant species are going to create a loss of native plants ---- I.e. the livestock is going to eat the native plants. I.e. the invasive plant species are going to take over the soil (similar to weeds) and make it harder for native plants to grow or something.
