Many tourists and local vacationers come to the Heluma River for white water rafting from July to September every year. This year, there were several protests about the ecological harm caused by rafting activities in the river. Even though a survey showed that people’s interest in rafting in the Heluma River area remained unaffected by the protests, the rafting companies in the area saw a significant decline in their sales in September, a month when they usually have the most sales during the year.
Which of the following, if true, best explains the apparent discrepancy described above?
(A) The number of protests that happened against rafting was the largest this year.

Explanation:
Conclusion 1: the rafting companies in the area saw a significant decline in their sales in September
Conclusion 2: people’s interest in rafting in the Heluma River area remained unaffected
Assumption: Because of excessive rainfall this year, the Heluma became much rougher and more dangerous than usual.
The number of companies has fallen because the heluma has become dangerous place. The argument mentioned people's interest , but not the number of people. So, dangerous Heluma river has declined the number of companies , but not tourists' interest.

In this case, it is that interest in rafting remained high, but sales went down. So what we're looking to do is to find an alternative explanation as to why the sales could have gone down.
Option A - It doesn't matter how big the protests are. We have already been told in the argument that the protests have not affected levels of interest for rafting. What we're looking for is the (dis)connect between interest in rafting and sales of equipment. OUT
Option B - If this is true, it should actually POSITIVELY affect sales, not the other way around. This option only serves to deepen the paradox. OUT
Option C - This option says that the river was more dangerous to go rafting in this year because of rains. This option actually provides an explanation outside of the protests (which the stimulus told us didn't work) as to why sales could have gone down, while interest remained high. This option therefore works and is CORRECT
Option D - This may seem like it works at first glance, but we have to remember the parameters of the question. We wanna find the connect between high interest and low sales, not explain why the interest remained high. All this demonstrates is that the protestors did not get their desired outcome, which is nothing new. OUT
Option E - This is extremely unrelated. What the forest department believes or doesn't has no impact on the levels of interest in rafting or sales of equipment. OUT
