I am surprised that A is correct.
I believed that "instead of" is only for nouns and not phrases.
What is the source?

I went thru a post on manhattan which says
"'instead of', by contrast, can only be used with nouns, or with constructions that function as nouns (like gerunds and noun phrases)."
Can someone throw light on this ?
