What is the source of this question? I would encourage folks to consider the source of this and all questions before stressing over the OA.

That said, I'd encourage you to check out Chris Ryan's post at https://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/rat ... t1177.html to see why "going" is actually a gerund and can thus legitimately follow "instead of."

Since her report was due on Monday, Tracy decided that she had better work on it this weekend instead of going to the lake with her friends.

a) had better work on it this weekend instead of going
b) should have had to work on it this weekend instead of going
c) might ought to work on it this weekend besides to go
d) better have worked on it this weekend and not going
e) had better work on it this weekend by not going

Brett,

Could you explain the grammar behind the underlined part? Going by the ear I picked A as I've encountered such statements before but I'm not sure about the grammar part as we know that past participle "had" is used to describe the former of 2 actions that occurred in the past. Here, the action (Tracy's work) is described from the past, so is a past participle required here? The whole setup is confusing to me!!

IMO

Two events are discussed, 1 happened before another so Usage of Had. ie, A and E left
A choice was made - opting one and not the other. Instead of actually provides that 'choice b/w two' rather than 'by not'.
Also, considering usage of noun after instead of - Going is a gerund here so doesn't sounds awkward too.
