Astrophysicists measure cosmic distances in light years ; the more the number of light years, the longer the cosmic distance.

A.) Astrophysicists measure cosmic distances in light years ; the more the number of light years, the longer the cosmic distance

B.) Astrophysicists measure cosmic distances in light years ; the more the number of light years, the longer the cosmic distance is that much long

C.) Astrophysicists measure cosmic distances in light years ; the more the number of light years, the longer the cosmic distance is

D.) Astrophysicists measure cosmic distances in light years ; the more the number of light years, much longer the cosmic distance

E.) Astrophysicists measure cosmic distances in light years ; When the number of light years is more, the longer the cosmic distance.

Can someone correct me? Isn't the second clause after the semi colon in (A) NOT an independent clause? Isn't an independent clause required for a semi colon?

Though i agree that "the more the...the longer the.." is an idiom . But as per grammar doesnt a semi colon demand an independant clause?? "the more the...the longer the.." is an idiom and not an independant clause .Plz comment

C that has "is" at the end is an independant clause

Raising this topic as well.
Agree that A is correct in terms of Idiom, but don't we need a verb for the independent clause after the semicolon?

AdityaHongunti , you and Eladt are correct.

That semicolon should be an em dash or a colon.

Manhattan GMAT is different from Manhattan Prep.

I know that finding questions is difficult.

This question is not of good quality. I will tag it as such.

Question:
Is "the higher the number" better than "the more the number" ?
sucal000 - Aannndd with another excellent question demonstrating that this topic is riddled with errors, it gets put to rest.

You are very close. We use "the greater" for quantities of things that are themselves numbers, such as distance (light years), volume, and cost.

The greater the number of light years, the longer the cosmic distance.

The area of Nigeria is greater than the area of neighboring Ghana.
