Can anybody tell how the rest of the sentence i.e. (very different from the soldiers that remained to guard the hospital) is getting connected to the previous statement in C?

A.  Each of the fallen soldiers  ( Subject ) – Henry Johnson, Paul Rider, Brent Hall and Bob McCay -  were  hard workers -->  SIngular subject with plural verb. 
B. Henry Johnson, Paul Rider, Brent Hall and Bob McCay -  each of them fallen soldiers  – were hard workers -->  The text between "- -" usually denotes examples and is not essential to the sentence. Hence in this option, meaning will changed if we discard the text "each of them fallen soldiers". Apart from that "each of them fallen soldiers" itself is wrong grammatically  
C.  The fallen soldiers  (Subject) – Henry Johnson, Paul Rider, Brent Hall and Bob McCay -  were  all hard workers  --> Corrects the error in A. 
D. Hard workers - Henry Johnson, Paul Rider, Brent Hall and Bob McCay - each a fallen soldier  --> Meaning error  
E. Hard workers - Henry Johnson, Paul Rider, Brent Hall and Bob McCay - every one a fallen soldier  --> Meaning error
