I also picked E):

my rationale is that "have walked" signals the effect is still in place... however, the intention is that we want to state that today, whales don't walk anymore, so we should just use the simple past.

we need the perfect tense if the sentence says "whales have evolved from having appendages to having fins..." or something like that.

walking doesnt make sense as nothing is going on...
so B and C wring..

D says land which once exited..i..e modifying land..so incorrect..

now A and E are left..
A uses have
but here we can use simple past so A is wrong..

my answer is E

E. walked on land using appendages that once existed

Confused between D and E.........

E says appendages once existed on which fins exist today??? ........

Its between D and E.. And I go for E as well..
vudsri000, I think the reason why E is because appendages are replaced by fins today.. So D wrongly modifies land..

Hope it helps.

OA please!!!!

My Answer is E as well

Their modern bone structure suggests that whales originally have walked on land using appendages that once existed where fins exist today.
A. have walked on land using appendages that once existed
B. were walking on land using appendages that existed once
C. were walking using appendages on land that once existed
D. walked using appendages on land that once existed
E. walked on land using appendages that once existed

It should be walked and not walking to be used in this sentence so B and C out.

In D and E, It is E because the statement after 'that' modifies anything before it so it was appendages and not land that is modified by the statement after 'That'
C is wrong because of the modifier rule as above.

Please let me know in case I am wrong..... :-D
I will give a fight till the End....!!!! :knight
