You count the number of different colored circles as that represents the amount of people in each club. You can distinguish the individual clubs by looking at which coordinator belongs to which club.

Hi Swagatalaxmi,

Can you explain the answer to question 1 in detail? How do you derive the answer to question 1

Question 1:

  • Avian Club has five black-colored members: Lee, Kevin, Sal, John, Carl. So the answer is Yes.
  • Songbird Society has six orange-colored members: Helen, Sonya, Julia, David, Alex, Ali. So the answer is Yes.
  • Urban Bird Lovers has four blue-colored members: Paul, Lisa, Bill, Sue. So the answer is No.

Hi Bunuel,

Because we count members, not emails. There are five black nodes total, so the club has five people. How many emails Lee got is irrelevant to the club size.

Hey can someone explain q3
Question 3: For each of the following arrows in the diagram, select Yes if, based on the information provided, a club member's following instructions would help explain why that arrow appears in the diagram. Otherwise select No.

The task is to check each arrow and ask: could this email exist just because someone followed the instructions (members email their own coordinator; coordinators email each other)? If yes, mark Yes. If it would require emailing someone outside those rules, mark No.

• The arrow from Ali's node to Helen's

Ali and Helen are in the same club, and Helen is that club’s coordinator. Members were instructed to email their preferences to their own coordinator, so an email from Ali to Helen fits the instructions.

Answer: Yes.

• The arrow from Julia's node to Sonya's

Julia and Sonya are in the same club, but Sonya is not the coordinator. The instruction is to send preferences to the club’s coordinator (Helen), not to another regular member, so this arrow is not explained by following instructions.

Answer: No.

• The arrow from Carl's node to Paul's

Carl is in Lee’s club, but Paul is the coordinator of a different club. A regular member should email only their own coordinator (Carl to Lee), and only coordinators are supposed to contact each other (Lee to Paul). So Carl emailing Paul is not explained by following instructions.

Answer: No.
