The graph above shows the results of a survey of Asian Americans and their perspective on life in America. Respondents who replied "Don't know" are not included in the chart. Note the lifestyle aspect of Strength of family ties provides an outlier data point relative to other lifestyle categories.
From each drop-down menu, select the option that creates the most accurate statement based on the information provided.
1. The average (arithmetic mean) of the percentage of respondents that said a particular lifestyle aspect was better in their country of origin was percentage points higher with the inclusion of the skewed outlier data point than it was without the inclusion of the skewed outlier data point. A. 4.2 B. 6.4 C. 9.7
2. On average, the number of respondents who did not respond for each of the lifestyle categories was . A. Greater than 5% B. 5% C. Less than 5%
For question 1 we need to calculate the average percentage of respondents that said a particular lifestyle aspect was better in their country of origin and then find the difference without the outlier.
We take all the responses that said a particular aspect was better in their country of origin and then average them.
\(\frac{(5+3+9+13+7+28+56)}{7}\) = 17.28
We then remove the outlier from the data (the number farthest from the average)
\(\frac{(5+3+9+13+7+28)}{6}\) = 10.83
Then find the difference between the two: 17.28-10.83= 6.4
For question 2 we need to find the amount of people who didn't respond to the survey and compare it to the total amount of responses.
We subtract the better in country of origin, better in US, and about the same responses from 100 to find the % that didn't answer
We get: 4+5+6+5+3+6+4 = 33
Then take the average: \(\frac{33}{7}\) = 4.71% = less than 5%
