If a^2 − b = n, what is the value of a?
(1) n + b = 4
(2) b = 1

Question: a = ?
Given: \(a^2 − b = n\)
i.e. \(a^2 = n+b\)
Statement 1: n + b = 4
i.e.\(a^2 = 4\)
i.e. a = +2 (two possible values of a)
NOT SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: b = 1
No information about n hence a can NOT be calculated
NOT SUFFICIENT
Combining the two statements
still we have, a = +2 (two possible values of a)
NOT SUFFICIENT
Answer: Option E
