Step 1: Analyse Question Stem
A company’s total advertising budget is divided into four components in the ratio of 8 : 7 : 3 : 2 respectively.
Since a ratio does not always represent the actual value, the actual values of these can be assumed to be 8k, 7k, 3k and 2k respectively.
The dollar value of the radio budget has to be found out; therefore, we have to find the value of 7k, for which we need the value of k.
Step 2: Analyse Statements Independently (And eliminate options) – AD / BCE
Statement 1: The television budget is $18,750 more than the newspaper budget
This means, 8k = 3k + 18750.
Can we find out the value of k from the above equation? Yes, we can. Therefore, we can also find out the value of 7k and hence answer the question.
In a lot of DS questions like these, save time by not trying to find the exact answer.
The data in statement 1 is sufficient to find a unique value for the dollar value of the radio budget.
Statement 1 alone is sufficient. Answer options B, C and E can be eliminated.
Statement 2: The magazine budget is $7,500.
This means, 2k = 7,500
This is clearly sufficient to find the value of k and hence the value of 7k.
The data in statement 2 is sufficient to find a unique value for the dollar value of the radio budget.
Statement 2 alone is sufficient. Answer option A can be eliminated.
