hey many congratulations on the fantastic score....and thanks a ton for the amazing debrief.

Could you please share what all material did you do in 2 months for quant and verbal? Thanks.

QUANT: I read through all the MGMAT math books to get a base understanding, but honestly the most useful thing to help me move from the 600s to the 700s was the book that Banuel put together:

gmat-math-book-in-downloadable-pdf-format-130609.html

I would highly recommend reading this book and taking notes as you go through. There will be some formulas that you don't know or concepts that you don't understand, and when you come across one of the aforementioned concepts make sure to it them down and review it multiple times.
Also, I highly recommend the gmatclub tests that are available (I think its like $20-$30 for a 3 month subscription or something). There are a ton of quant questions that you can do in timed sets that are extremely beneficial, both for building your base knowledge and for making sure your timing is on point.

VERBAL: The MGMAT materials were very good, particularly for CR and SC. I used the 5th edition and it worked wonders. I would also recommend Mike from Magoosh. He has some great insight and I found some of his articles very useful, particularly surrounding parallelism (surprisingly hard for native speakers) and spotting unique idioms. Here is the starting point for some of Mike's Magoosh SC posts. Disclaimer: I did not purchase any subscription to Magoosh, so all I used was the free content.

Reading comprehension is a tough one to improve in my opinion. I did start reading a passage or two a day on various recommended sites (The New Yorker, MIT Technology Review, Wall Street Journal) and I tried to specifically read passages that I would never normally read to try and practice forcing myself to engage in boring materials. This helped me I think in the long run, but again it is hard to quantify whether or not this helped me drastically.

Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Thanks a ton for your detailed reply! Appreciate!

I too agree that the MGMAT and a lot of prep quant material is MUCH more difficult and convoluted than the actual quant on the GMAT.

The quant on the GMAT is weird; it covers a wide breadth of material, and rewards knowledge of theory in lieu of hard math. I originally got tripped up by focusing on difficult problems presented by MGMAT and some of the question banks on this forum. However, after just reading the OG and the GMAT Club Quant Book, I raised my score from a 34-48 in quant.

Congrats! I just took my first MGMAT CAT and received similar to what you got (610: 37Q,36V).

I'm giving myself two months to prepare as well, so hopefully I will follow a similar score progression to yours.

Congrats. Can you elaborate more on SC section? How difficult was it?

SC was very similar to the GMATprep materials, but I would say that the SC is harder than the MGMAT materials. There were a few MGMAT tests I took in which I only missed 1 or 2 SC questions, but in the GMATprep materials I consistently missed 5-10. I will say that once you have thoroughly reviewed the GMATprep SC problems and understand the traps (what 'sounds right') it is much easier to boost your verbal score. SC needs to be a strength more than a weakness, as you see many more SC problems than any other type. Also, each SC question is an opportunity to, if approached correctly, save you a few valuable seconds down the road.

As I mentioned, I think the materials from Mike on Magoosh's website are valuable and I would definitely spin through them if you have a few spare minutes over your lunch break (ps I have no affiliation with Magoosh, just think credit is due).

Feel free to ask anything else.

Hi robertsonsd, Congratulations on an awesome score !!
Since you've taken MGMAT CATs a lot of time. even a 2nd reset I can see. How helpful is that. ?
And as you mentioned about the relative difficulty of Quant in the actual GMAT vs MGMAT CAT , How about verbal ?
How did you find it compared to MGMAT CATs or GMATPREP ?
Thanks
