Hey guys,
Wanted to go over my experience of prepping and taking the GMAT FE and the timeline.
Some background on me:Asian, male, US citizen, 24 years old with 2 years of work experience as a technical project manager in a semiconductor manufacturing company. Looking to pivot careers into consulting/tech through an MBA. Background in mechanical engineering from a top 5 engineering undergrad in the US with a strong GPA (3.8+). Trying for M7/T15 schools.
The prep:Nov/11: Decided to start prepping for GMAT FE, since I wanted to apply in R1/R2 of 2024 application cycle (2025 intake). Thought that getting the exam scores out of the way early will be great for application time. Bought all official study material from the official website (the whole bundle) and started reading/understanding the format.
Nov/17: Took my first official practice test to understand my baseline score. 605 [Q84, V78, DI78]. Verbal was below mean, needded to focus more there.
Dec/4: Took practice test #2 after some more practice. 665 [Q86, V82, DI81]. Happy with progress, wanted to continue seeing a positive trend. Definitely think I got lucky, a bit easier questions.
Dec/20: Took practice test #3. 645 [Q82, V81, DI82]. Felt okay at this point being around the 90th percentile. Definitely aiming for something beyond the 95th percentile.
Dec/26: Took practice test #4. 645 again [Q83, V80, DI83]. Frustrated at this point as I could not see progress, and thought that I would be stuck around the 645-665 mark. Started taking up reading novels again as a pass time when I'm not working/studying.
Jan/3: Took practice test #5. 695 [Q87, V83, DI83]. Felt amazing during this attempt. Felt that verbal and data insights became significantly easier to understand once I started reading more. This was beyond the goal score that I wanted (675/685+) so decided to register to take the official thing on Jan/12.
Jan/9: Last practice test, #6. 685 [Q86, V83, DI83]. Felt good to see consistency in my score finally. Confident that I can do well on D-day.
Throughout this time, I was spending probably 1 hour a day outside of work practicing problems. If I took a test one day, the next day was spent on analyzing mistakes.
The official test:The morning of, started off with warming up my brain with 5 questions from each section. Got close to a 100% accuracy, which helped calm me down.
Jan/12: Official test: 695 [Q86, V86, DI82]. I was so relieved when I saw the score pop up on my screen. In terms of mistakes: 2 in quant, 3 in verbal, and 6 in data insights. No answer changes (didn't have much time to review).
Feel free to ask me anything, glad I could share my experience so far with you guys. Verbal was definitely my weakest spot, but it turned into my strongest by the time test day came around (V86 is 98th percentile in verbal!). Excited to see how application season turns out to be!
