Live from MBA Chat

Q: How can one come to know whether a particular score is good to apply to any particular school or not ? Can we use the average gmat score of the school for deciding it?

Maria: this is something where my opinion may be a bit unconventional, but I believe that looking at just the average GMAT score is not sufficient. Over-represented groups need to do BETTER than the "Average" score. For example, according to GMAC, I believe that test-takers from India tend to do 20 - 30 points higher than the global average ( could be attributed in part to the heavy test-taking culture in India, etc.) -- THEREFORE, *MY* guidance is for people from India to deduct ~20-30 points from their score to start to figure out where their score is competitive......but of course, GMAT score is like an intellectual hurdle to clear. Proving intellect is "necessary but not sufficient" in this process. Put another way, a high GMAT score won’t get anyone in, but a low score will probably keep people out (unless they have amazing work experience, etc., of course) . This blog post of mine may provide additional insight here: blog.applicantlab.com/mba-admissions-committees-needs-meet-needs/
