What is open MBA chat?
1. It's a 2 hour informal chat with MBA expert without any specific topic/agenda.

If I can't get recommendation letter from my current manager, is there any other good alternative which you would recommend?
Donna: This is a great question on how to handle reco letters. More and more adcoms realize that it is a tough world out there in work... hence why you want to get the MBA and get away for a few years:) so they do understand that sometimes you can’t get your supervisor because you are afraid of tipping your hand early. Best way to handle this is explain in a SENTENCE or two- not a whole essay! and just say I don’t feel comfortable signaling B school yet and then just get someone else in a supervisory role who can comment on your work from past or from a non direct report source. But it should be someone who is senior to you- not a peer.
How to Write "Why MBA" Essay Effectively
Donna: I had a great session last week with Frank Delvecchis at Wharton. And we talked about the WHY MBA and what’s next thing... and it is refreshing to know that schools know people are not fully sure. So it is ok to say I might want product management in tech or I might want to be in operations role in tech and that I want to learn more in B school to figure that out. As long as this is consistent with what you did in the past- so this would be a realistic statement for an engineer to make- and it is ok to explain your thought process and not have to be 100% sure.
What essential criteria you look for in an application from a candidate who is from non-profit or government sector with no experience in business management? And whether this becomes a hindrance to his career options after completing his/her MBA?
Donna: For non-profit or govt sector the thing that matters is IMPACT. Just show that you have set and achieved goals. The fact that it is not business is not as important- but show you know how to get things done and lead people. And then explain why you want the business now. It is fairly common and schools like diversity. And no I don’t think it becomes a hindrance post MBA- especially if one does an internship. Probably not good for this background to do a one year MBA. At least for US programs.
