Q: While shortlisting business schools to apply, is there any methodical approach Fortuna suggests for MBA aspirants? What factors should one consider when shortlisting business schools?

Melissa: When choosing a school it’s really about what’s the best fit for you...even if you’ve always wanted to go to harvard let’s say, perhaps it’s not the best school for you and your short/long term goals. Candidates must do their homework. The business school application is an opportunity to exhibit not just a level of familiarity with MBA qualifications, but also a real understanding of the personality, strengths, and resources of the schools candidates wish to apply to. Research is essential. So when choosing, can you establish what sets Kellogg apart from Wharton? How does Cornell differ from Tuck? How can each school help you achieve your career goals? Schools might look similar on paper, but they each have their own identity and approach to management development.

Q: I have a question about essays. Is it ok to go over the word limit by 5-10% in the essays?

Melissa: Good question...every school is actually different. Some are quite strict and you get cut off at the exact word count (like when you put your answers into the data application form) but some are more lenient. Generally they give 5-10% extra. But I would test the form and see if you get cut off!
