Live from MBA Chat

Q: Are one-year mba programs suitable for career changes or should I only look at two year programs?? For example, I work in finance department of a company and change my career to the strategy.

Melissa: 2 year programs are often said to be better as you have more time for learning, internships and networking etc. But it is possible with a 1 year program...for example, INSEAD has a 1 year program where you can do an internship, plus tons of graduates from 1 year programs have made major career changes. So I can’t really vote for 1 over the other...1 thing to do is review your targets schools employment statistics books (often they say include career changers and how quickly they found work). We’ve written some great articles on career changers on our Forbes posts or our blog - check them out ( http://fortunaadmissions.com/blog/ or go to Forbes - Matt Symonds b-school review )

Live from MBA Chat

Q: How is a successful entrepreneurial experience seen by ad-coms? as opposed to working with a large consult or a BB-bank? If i founded a USD 1 Mn startup, would that be something golden? or are start-ups considered gold only in case they’ve raised a 100 Mn USD?

Melissa: B-schools love entrepreneurs and it especially bodes well if it’s been a success...even if it failed, b-schools know that starting your own co. is no easy task. It demonstrates a lot of courage, determination, leadership and much more. So yes this will be something golden for them! Remember they want a class that is very diverse...not just full of students from large firms/corporates
