Hey everyone,
I am an agriculture graduate with nearly 5 years of experience in the sector. I am currently leading an agriculture project in India and have international experience as well. I am currently shooting in dark with close to no guidance from someone from the similar educational background who has appeared for GMAT. I have unsuccessfully tried looking on LinkedIn. It would be helpful if someone from here with a similar sort of background can help me in the preliminary assessment of my profile: what are my chances and what I need to improve on. Better would be if there is someone from the agriculture background who has went onto graduate from one of the prestigious MBA schools.
Thank you for all your help and guidance.
Hi
aniket5040,
Thanks for sharing your background—your experience in agriculture projects, especially with both domestic and international exposure, is already a strong differentiator. While many MBA applicants come from finance, consulting, or tech, schools increasingly value candidates from diverse industries like agriculture, sustainability, and development. Your profile could stand out if framed correctly.
A couple of suggestions to help you move forward:
- Clarify your goals – Admissions committees care a lot about why you want an MBA and what you plan to do afterward. Linking your agriculture background to future ambitions (agribusiness leadership, impact investing in food systems, sustainability strategy, etc.) will strengthen your story.
- GMAT/GRE preparation – Since you’re starting without much direct guidance, you might want to connect with GMAT prep communities (GMAT Club, Reddit r/GMAT) where you’ll find structured strategies. Your test score will play a big role in opening doors to top programs.
- Networking with alumni – Instead of searching broadly on LinkedIn, try targeting alumni databases of schools you’re interested in. Many MBAs from top schools are open to sharing insights, even if they’re not from an agriculture background.
- Leverage your uniqueness – Very few applicants can claim deep experience in agriculture. Schools that emphasize social impact, sustainability, or global development (e.g., Yale SOM, Cornell Johnson, Michigan Ross, Oxford Said) may be especially receptive.
