khatti_toffee - The GMAT score is a bit on the lower side for ISB: was the score in line with your mocks and do you foresee an improvement if you were to retake?

Selecting the right mix of schools will depend on multiple factors such as these. Feel free to reach out here if you'd like to discuss your profile and plans.

I just took the GMAT Focus Edition and scored a 625 (V81, Q87, DI75)

Background: BTech from a Tier 1.5 engineering college (2024 grad) with CGPA 7.91 , Class 10: 10 CGPA, Class 12: 86.6%, 13 months of work experience at Micron Semiconductor, Currently 4 months into a BD role at a DeFi protocol (Crypto Space)

Internships: Research intern at IIM Udaipur , BD Intern at a couple of Web3 startups (international teams), Attended two international conferences (Singapore and Dubai), Written a few technical articles in the Web3 space

Leadership Proxy : Was part of College PlaceComm Team,

I’m targeting ISB PGPYL, European MiM programs, BITSOM, and XIMB. With this profile, which colleges should I realistically aim for?

That's a strong profile with an excellent academic record, relevant experience in the high-tech and crypto spaces, and notable extracurricular/leadership involvement! Your GMAT Focus Edition score of 625 (which is in the $\sim$80th percentile and equivalent to a GMAT Classic score of $\sim$680) is competitive but slightly below the average/median for your most ambitious targets.
Here is an assessment of your target schools:
🇮🇳 Indian B-Schools
[hr]
ISB PGP YL (Post Graduate Programme in Management for Young Leaders)
  • Average GMAT Focus Score Target: $\sim$655-695 ($\sim$90th percentile, equivalent to GMAT Classic 710-740).
  • Assessment: This is a reach program for you based on the GMAT Focus score alone, as you are below the general competitive range.
    • Strengths: Your profile is exceptionally strong in non-score areas, which ISB values highly:
      • Academics: Excellent (Tier 1.5 BTech, high CGPA, strong 10th and 12th scores).
      • Work Experience: Highly relevant and unique with a Tier 1 company (Micron) and a BD role in the DeFi/Crypto space. This unique industry diversity is a major advantage.
      • Activities: IIM Udaipur research intern, international Web3 internships, technical articles, and college leadership (PlaceComm) demonstrate initiative, intellectual curiosity, and leadership potential.
    • Recommendation: Apply, but emphasize your unique professional and academic narrative (Web3, FinTech, Tier-1 experience) in your essays and interview to compensate for the GMAT score. You have a shot due to your compelling background, but it's a competitive application.
BITSOM (BITS School of Management)
  • Median GMAT Focus Score Target: The reported median GMAT Classic score for BITSoM is 690, which is equivalent to a GMAT Focus score of around 635 to 645. The accepted range is broad (GMAT Classic 600-770).
  • Assessment: This is a target/stretch school. Your 625 is slightly below the median, but well within the accepted range.
    • Strengths: Your profile aligns well with a school looking for bright, well-rounded engineers with unique work experience. Your BTech from a good college, strong academics, and experience at Micron/DeFi will be highly valued.
    • Recommendation: This is a strong application. BITSoM's holistic review process means your work experience and academic background can easily overcome a slightly lower-than-median GMAT score.
XIMB (Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar)
  • GMAT Score Target: XIMB generally has an overall profile-based cut-off. For the equivalent to the CAT cutoff (typically $\sim$91 percentile for MBA-BM), your GMAT Focus score of 625 should be competitive for a call, especially with your academic profile.
  • Assessment: This is a safe/target school.
    • Strengths: Your academics and work experience are superior to the typical profile at this level, making you a very strong candidate. Your GMAT Focus score is likely sufficient to clear the shortlisting stage.
    • Recommendation: You should be highly competitive for an interview call.
🇪🇺 European MiM Programs (Master in Management)
[hr]
General Overview
The MiM programs in Europe are typically aimed at candidates with little to no work experience, making your 17 months of experience perfect for the format.
  • Top-Tier (Reach): Schools like HEC Paris, LBS, INSEAD MiM.
    • GMAT Focus Equivalent: These schools generally have a very high average/median (e.g., HEC Paris MiM has a reported average GMAT Focus of $\sim$635, while LBS and INSEAD's competitive scores are higher, around $\sim$655-675).
    • Recommendation: These are reach schools for you on the score alone, but your strong BTech, IIM research, and unique professional experience (especially in Web3) make you a unique and attractive candidate. Your Verbal and DI scores are solid. Apply strategically to 2-3 of these, leveraging your story and uniqueness rather than just your score.

For ISB PGPYL and top European MiMs, your profile has a good mix of academics, early professional traction, and Web3 exposure. Your CGPA, strong school record, international conference exposure, and niche experience in DeFi/Micron help you stand out, but your total work experience still places you in the “early career” bucket where schools look heavily at academic strength + leadership potential.

ISB PGPYL is possible but competitive. For European MiMs, you’re well aligned for schools like ESSEC, ESCP, ESMT and LBS MiM. BITSOM and XIMB are very much within range with your current profile.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances, happy to help!

Hi khatti_toffee,

You’re in a good place for early-career programs, and your profile has a clear tech + Web3 angle that can work well if positioned right.

With a 625 GMAT Focus, Tier-1.5 engineering background, and ~1.5 years of experience across semiconductors and DeFi, you’re well-aligned with ISB PGPYL, European MiM programs, and Indian early-career MBAs. Your internships, international exposure, and writing in the Web3 space add differentiation for someone this early in their career.

Your choice of universities is realistic; however, the outcome of your applications will largely depend on how effectively your profile is presented and the overall quality of your application.

Your GMAT is not a dealbreaker for these programs. A retake only makes sense if you believe you can push into the 660+ Focus range; otherwise, focus on storytelling—why tech, why Web3, and why management now. Overall, this is a credible, modern profile for early-career programs. With tight essays and clear intent, you can convert well this cycle.
