I'm consistently hitting a raw verbal of 40-42 with probably about 6 tests exactly at V41. I think I missed about 5 questions on a verbal 42 and 6 on a verbal 41. Does the difference really come down to 1 or 2 questions between 42+?

You're verbal scores are quite good! You probably already realize this, but your score also depends on which questions you answer incorrectly. A 750-level question, for instance, has more weight than a 500-level question.
But from what I have learned from other members, and based on my own experience, the verbal section score tends to decrease more quickly than the quantitative section score.
