I chose C too, and was surprised that it was marked incorrect.

I agree with KarishmaB and MartyMurray that the answer should be C.

It is very rare that the OG has an incorrect answer like this.

I was curious to look at the official explanation in the OG. I searched through all the hard questions, then all the mediums; hilariously, I then found it marked as "easy", but it's definitely a hard question with unusual wording.

Note that the OG difficulty levels quite often don't match the difficulty data on GMAT Club.

Here's the official explanation, but it is vague and not helpful:

KarishmaB
You select what seems correct to you based on your reasoning. As I said, I will select (C) here and move on. Do not takeaway that (E) could be the right answer in such a case on GMAT. This question does not adhere to the typical logic used by GMAT questions.

Why this is a trap

The stem never says Train A travels at constant speed on the bridge.

It only gives the total time to cross.

GMAT rules: you cannot assume constant speed unless explicitly stated.

Statement (2) might describe a different scenario:

The pole could be anywhere, not necessarily on the bridge.

The train might accelerate or decelerate on the bridge.

So, the speed from Statement (2) cannot reliably be used for the bridge.

I also chose C for this question. Can someone explain to me why the official answer is E?

Reading through the past threads it seems like we can infer that:
* from the question: we don't know that the train is constant speed
* from statement 1: we know the length of the bridge is 600m
* from statement 2: we know that train A takes 10 seconds to travel the length of a so distance = speed of a (let this be s) * 10 seconds

Combining everyone wouldn't we know that
1) s * 30 secs = 600 + x
2) s * 10 secs = x

x = 150m; but is it E because the s in 1 and 2 are different?

Agreed with your solution, can I check one thing though - In statement 1 we also aren't told whether the 40 seconds is from starting point of the train to starting or starting to end

chetan2u

What is the length of Train A if it crosses Bridge X in 30 seconds from the moment it enters the bridge to the moment its final carriage exits the bridge?

So, the train takes 30 seconds to travel a distance that is equal to sum of length of bridge and the train itself. Nothing else known.

(1) Train B, which is 200 meters long, traveling at a constant speed of 20 meters per second, crosses Bridge X in 40 seconds.
This would give us the length of the bridge.
In 40 seconds, the train will travel 20*40 or 800 m, which is length of bridge + legth o ftrain B = > 200+Bridge = 800 or bridge = 600m
Nothing about A.

(2) The end of Train A, which is traveling at a constant speed, passes a pole in 10 seconds from the moment the train meets the pole.
So, the train at constant speed, say C, can travel its length in 10 seconds.
Nothing about bridge or speed of train on bridge.

Combined
We know bridge is 600m and the train takes 30 seconds but we cannot comment till we know the speed on teh bridge.
But, say, the speed was same as given in statement 2, then in 30 seconds, the train would cover thrice its length. 3*L = L+Bridge or 2L = 600 or L=300
However, the speed is not given nor are we told that the train moves throughout with constant speed.

Hello Puranjay,

When a question states that an object crosses a bridge or a pole, you can assume it refers to the object covering the distance from its starting point until its entire length has completely passed the bridge or pole.

I hope this helps.
