What is the remainder if the positive integer y is divided by 3?

(1) y is an even integer.
(2) y is a multiple of 6.

Target question: What is the remainder if the positive integer y is divided by 3?

Statement 1: y is an even integer.
So, some possible values of y include: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, ...etc
Case a: If y = 2, then y divided by 3 leaves a remainder of 2
Case b: If y = 4, then y divided by 3 leaves a remainder of 1
Since we cannot answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: y is a multiple of 6
If y is a multiple of 6, then we can write: y = 6k (for some integer k)
We can rewrite this as: y = (3)(2k), which tells us that y is a multiple of 3
If y is a multiple of 3, then y divided by 3 MUST leave a remainder of 0
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT

Answer: B

Cheers,
Brent
