What is the remainder when the positive integer P is divided by 6?

I. P = 6k+1
so, the remainder is 1 when the positive integer P is divided by 6. sufficient

II. P > 3
if, p=4, rem is 4
BUT if, p=5, rem is 5. insufficient

correct answer is A

P/6, remainder=?
P= pos integer
Statement 1:
P=6k+1
No need to do any work.
Directly says 1 is the remainder.
Sufficient
Statement 2:
P>3
If p=4, remainder=4
If p=6, remainder=0
Insufficient
A

No info given on k.

1. P= 6k+1
k= 1.5 gives P= 10, remainder= 4
k= 1 gives P= 7, remainder = 1
Insufficient

2. P> 3 , insufficient

1 and 2, same as 1. Insufficient

Answer should be E

What is the remainder when the positive integer P is divided by 6?

    I. P = 6k+1
    II. P > 3

If k is integer then the remainder is 1 always. But if k is not integer remainders can vary.

i) if k = 1/6 => P = 2 => Remainder = 2
if k = 1 => P = 7 => Remainder = 1
-Not Sufficient

ii) P>3
if P=4 => Remainder = 4
if P=5 => Remainder = 5

Combining
k=4/6 => P = 5 => Remainder = 5
k=3/6 => P = 4 => Remaidner = 4

Insufficient

Hey Saurav, Preetam,

Thanks for posting your solution. :)

However, you made a small mistake in statement 1. You "assumed" that k is a positive integer. What if k = 1/2, in that case, will we get remainder as 1?
