Join A and D as shown in the sketch. Also extend AB to meet perpendicular from D at E.
We have a right angled triangle ADE, where AE is 10+6 or 16 and DE is 16.
Hence, AD is \(\sqrt{16^2+16^2}\) or \(16\sqrt{2}\)

It's easier to figure out the solution, if we extend the sides to make it a square. Side of the square is 16, so its diagonal would be the straight line. And diagonal of square is S√2, hence 16√2 is the answer.
