What is the total weight of four crates?

(1) The average weight of the four crates is 200 pounds.
Average = 200 pounds for four crates. So total weight = 200 * 4 = 800 pounds. This statement gives exactly what we wanted. Sufficient.

(2) The total weight of two of the crates is exactly three times the total weight of the other two crates.
This option gives us ratio of weight. But we do not have enough information to calculate actual weight - Insufficient.

Ans: Option A

Statement 1 sufficient:

Avg = 200
total = Avg*no
total = 200*4 = 800

Statement nt sufficient:
crates : A,B,C,D
Given : A+B = 3(C+D)
T=A+B+C+D =>> 4(C+D)
values unknown, hence not sufficient.

Forget conventional ways of solving math questions. For DS problems, the VA (Variable Approach) method is the quickest and easiest way to find the answer without actually solving the problem. Remember that equal numbers of variables and independent equations ensure a solution.

The first step of the VA (Variable Approach) method is to modify the original condition and the question, and then recheck the question.

We can modify the question in the following way.

Assume a, b, c, and d are weights of four crates.
The question asks for the value of a + b + c + d.
a + b + c + d = ?

Condition 1) :
( a + b + c + d ) / 4 = 200 ⇔ a + b + c + d = 800
Condition 1) is same as the question.
It is sufficient.

Condition 2) :
a + b = 3( c + d ).
This equation doesn't give any information about the sum of a, b, c and d.
Thus condition 2) is not sufficient.

Therefore, the answer is A.

St 1 :The average weight of the four crates is 200 pounds. This means Total weight divided by 4 is 200. Then the total weight should be 200 x 4 = 800 pounds sufficient
St 2 : This statement gives only the ratio of weight of 2 barrels to the weight of other 2 barrels. Insufficient. So the answer is B.

Avg x n = total

A) 200 for 4 boxes and thus total = 800

B this gives a ratio b/w boxes and thus insufficient

(A) imo

Solu IMO A
statement 1 average weight of 4 crates is 200 formula of average is total/no.of items so lets take x as total x/4=200 x=800 so total is 800 statement is sufficient. A or D will be answer.
statement 2 total of 2 crates is x and other 2 crates is y
so x=3y
total is x+2y don't have any value so A is the answer.
