What is the value of integer x ?
(1) |x + 3| = |3x - 5|
Since both sides are non-negative, we can square both sides..
\(x^2+6x+9=9x^2-30x+25..........8x^2-36x+16=0........2x^2-9x+4=0..............2x^2-8x-x+4=0.........2x(x-4)-1(x-4)=0.....(2x-1)(x-4)=0\)
So, x=4 or 1/2..
Now, since x is an integer, x=4
(2) |x| > 2
x could be anything 3, -3, 4..

What is the value of integer x ?
(1) |x + 3| = |3x - 5|
(2) |x| > 2
(1) |x + 3| = |3x - 5|
(2) |x| > 2
(1) For x>(5/3), we get,
x+3=3x-5
=>2x=8
=>x=4
This value of x is accepted as it is an integral value and is greater than 5/3
For -3<x<5/3, we get,
x+3=5-3x
=> 4x=2
=> x=1/2
This value of x is rejected as it is not an integral value.
For x<-3, we get,
-3-x=5-3x
=>-2x=-8
=> x=4
This value of x is rejected as it is greater than -3.
So, x=4.
Thus, sufficient.
(2) x>2 or x<-2, so we do not get a unique value of x.
Thus, insufficient.
Therefore, the answer is option B.
