we are to find out the positive integer a , a 2 digit integer.

Statement 1:

36 63 72 27 81 18 . NOT Sufficient.

Statement 2:

a is a multiple of 3.

All of the numbers listed above are multiple of 3.


(1 +2) : Still not possible to separate from the among.

Thus the best answer is E.

What is the value of the two-digit positive integer a?

Lets evaluate the given information:
(1) The sum of the two digits of a is 9
The digits of all multiples of 9 add up to 9 (18,27,36,45,54,63,72,81,90,99 & even the 3 digit multiples). This statement gives 10 possible outcomes. This is insufficient

(2) a is a multiple of 3.
All multiples of 9 are divisible by 3 atleast twice. This is also insufficient.

Combined (1) & (2); (1) gives 10 possibilities while (2) does not help eliminate any of them. Data is insufficient.

Correct answer (E)
