What is the value of x^2 + 2xy + y^2 ?

(1) x + y = 7
(2) x = 2

in this the y = -2 for the second equation x=2 so why isn't the answer d both sufficient on their own?

When you substitute x = 2 into x^2 + 2xy + y^2, you still need the value of y to calculate the value of the expression.
