We can rewrite the equation as

ST (1) (x + y)/3 = 6 => x/3 + y/3 = 6... Sufficient

ST (2) x + y = 18 Dividing both sides by 3 => (x+y)/3 = 6 => x/3 + y/3 = 6... Sufficient

Solution

To find:
• The value of the expression x/3 + y/3 = (x + y)/3

Analysing Statement 1
As per the information given in statement 1, (x + y)/3 = 6
• From this statement, we can directly say the value of the expression x/3 + y/3 is equal to 6.

Hence, statement 1 is sufficient to answer the question.

Analysing Statement 2
As per the information given in statement 2, x + y = 18
• Therefore, we can write x/3 + y/3 = (x + y)/3 = 18/3 = 6

Hence, statement 2 is sufficient to answer the question.

Combining Both Statements
Since we got the answer from either of the statements independently, this step is not required.

Hence, the correct answer is option D.

So we either need the value of (x+y) or (x+y)/3

Hence, both of the answers are individually sufficient.

To Find

The value of x/3 + y/3 OR the value of (x+y) / 3

Statement 1

(x+y)/ 6 = 3

x+y = 18

(x+y)/3 = 6

Since we have got one unique value of (x+y) /3, Statement 1 is independently sufficient.

Statement 2

x + y = 18

(x+y)/3 = 18/3 = 6

Since we have got one unique value of (x+y) /3, Statement 2 is independently sufficient.

Since both the statements are independently sufficient, the correct answer is D
